VLC media player is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files as well as discs, devices, and network streaming protocols.

This is the port of VLC media player to the Android™ platform. VLC for Android can play any video and audio files, as well as network streams, network shares and drives, and DVD ISOs, like the desktop version of VLC.

VLC for Android is a full audio player, with a complete database, an equalizer and filters, playing all weird audio formats.

VLC is intended for everyone, is totally free, has no ads, no in-app-purchases, no spying and is developed by passionate volunteers. All the source code is available for free.

VLC for Android™ plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), DVD ISOs, like the desktop version of VLC. It also support disk shares.

All formats are supported, including MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS, Wv and AAC. All codecs are included with no separate downloads. It supports subtitles, Teletext and Closed Captions.

VLC for Android has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.

VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments and gestures to control volume, brightness and seeking.

It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.

VLC for Android needs access to those categories:
• "Photos/Media/Files" to read your all media files :)
• "Storage" to read your all media files on SD cards :)
• "Other" to check network connections, change the volume, set the ringtone, run on Android TV and display the popup view, see below for details.

Permission Details :
• It needs "read the contents of your USB storage", in to order to read your media files on it.
• It needs "modify or delete the contents of your USB storage", in order to allow deletion of files and store subtitles.

• It needs "full network access", to open network and internet streams.
• It needs "prevent phone from sleeping" in order to prevent... your phone from sleeping when watching a video.
• It needs "change your audio settings", in order to change audio volume.
• It needs "modify system settings", in order to allow you to change your audio ringtone.
• It needs "view network connections" in order to monitor whether device is connected or not, to hide the streaming parts.
• It needs "draw over other apps" to start the popup menu.
• It needs "control vibration" to give feedback on the controls.
• It needs "run at startup" to set recommendations on Android TV launcher screen, only used with Android TV version.

Needs One More Feature The app is pretty good overall but I would like just one more feature. As of now, I can only play/pause through my head phone's button. Please add the feature of jumping to next song on two presses of the button. That's the most basic feature while using headphones and keeping your hands free.

Only one minor complaint. NOTE: I only use this for playing audio not video so I cannot speak to that. However, can I say that it works just fine for music and the like. One thing I would prefer is the option to move the playlists tab to the front in order to make playing personalised collections more convenient but otherwise I have no problems with it.

Great App This is probably one of the best apps you can get for playing media files. I only gave it four stars because DVD ISO playback is a bit choppy. But menus play absolutely fine. Not sure if this is due to my phone or the app. Make sure to compress your ISO to smaller then 4Gb. My phone doesn't not recognize NTFS or exFat partitions.

I love the overall feel,but the issue is that it fails to index any video or audio files and I've to refresh it every time the app starts to index them again. Also if you switch to another app and come back the seek freezes or it doesn't continues from the same place. If you fix the landscape issue and make it smart to detect if the video is in portrait or landscape and lock it, it would make the player much more ease to use.

Love it! Great updates! BUG - issue This app got much better! The new option to play from shared LAN folders is good but it does not save the credentials. I have to manually input them for each folder and file. It worked on a previous version but now it seems to fail for some reason. Please look into this! Thx

The Best Media Player I've been using VLC for years on all different platforms and I love it. With the realization that it is also a great mp3 player I'm convinced it's just the best. Last update was a little shaky, but it was fixed pretty quick. For free open source software that is available for literally every platform you can't beat it.

Android TV interface is good but, have some bugs Android TV interface is looking good and I'm loving it. After the video playback I just hit back then UI turned so weirdly being overlay first in the list video thumbnail image and I've scrolling down through all videos but, the first video thumbnail image still overlay to all videos kind of disturbance around 😐

It plays video and music just fine. It claims to support NFS but it doesn't seem to work properly. I tried to get it to access my network drive shared via NFS but it says the directory is empty. There's so little information about NFS support on VLC, not sure if it's expecting a certain flag from the server.

So many issues It lacks the ability to play directory which contains mutiple levels of subdirectories on my network storage. It plays directory only if in it directly are the video/audio files. I have to play folder by folder. Also the notification about playback error always close the player so when a playlist is being played it wont let next video to continue once pressed close button... Without pressing it we cannot see the video. Disable errors option would be nice.

Basic video player It's the basic, lightweight video player that's been around for years and plays everything. It's my favorite player for android and PC for most purposes. Loses one star because for me it had issues finding my video files and browsing directories until I reinstalled, and because it doesn't offer much in terms of organizing your files by show or season.

Great app! I've been using VLC for the longest time on my computers and I've never been disappointed. One thing I would like to see in the app is the ability to save a custom EQ setting. I've also noticed that when you change a setting, it resets when you go back to the player screen along with the volume setting above the EQ. Thanx.

Good but not great What I want is a music player like the one in my Cowon/Plenue Z2. It has two features that VLC lacks. One is 'shuffle play' that will play every song in my 4500-song collection at random. The other is 'auto continue' -- when it gets to the end of an album, it automatically continues with whatever is next. PLEASE add these features to VLC. I don't know how much longer the Z2 will last.

No "share" feature? I haven't found a share button on this player (the way my stock "gallery" has one). I feel this is the only missing feature for me as sometimes, I'll take multiple vids that all have similar thumbnails so a direct (straight from the VLC screen) share feature would make it much easier. Otherwise, awesome player. Been a fan of VLC on PC/Mac for 10+ years.

The last few updates were horrible I love VLC on my PC. But what is happening with the Android app? After the last 2-3 updates the app got more unstable and after another update today i cannot playback any video at all anymore.. As soon as i click on a file my phone freezes with a black screen and i have to kill the VLC app to regain control. SGS6 @ Android 6.0.1 Xtrestolite Deo Mode 3.3

so many problems on TV box this app has so many problems on TV boxes, first when media are removed, the app still index them, second, when playing a video, that's it! You cannot control or at least get some info of where you are at when paused, except pausing, you can do or see nothing else. useless for tv boxes. the screenshots where you see timeline and controls, don't show on android tv boxes

Doesn't like to seek If I try to seek several times in a video it freezes up and VLC wont work until I reboot my device. I do love when I'm hooked up to HDMI, that it only displays on my TV by default. Edit: It's bean crashing a lot and when it does my tablet reboots.

DONT UPDATE, NEW VERSION IS SLUGGISH This latest update is sluggish, it shows blank screen for 10-15 seconds before it opens up a video as opposed to 1-2 seconds in the past version. Also it doesn't immediately show screen controls with one tap when video is playing. IT'S SO ANNOYING, IRRITATING!

Every song skips at the beginning I got this app to adjust the volume level on my s7 which it did well. An issue I have with it is that at the beginning of a song you select or switch to, it skips in the first 5 or so seconds once. I have tried various methods of altering settings in order to fix this without avail. Please fix as this issue overshadows anything good about the app.

Permanent Audio Lag correction Awesome App! Would be awesome, if you guys could add on option to set a default Audio Lag correction depending in the current Bluetooth device that is connected. With the current version, when I connect my Bluetooth headphones, I always have to set the audio lag option manually. UPDATE: THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS FEATURE AVAILABLE IN Version 2.06

Almost flawless, but... The videos aren't organized well enough. All videos just stack over each other with no discipline, and you can't have each category separated by IDK folders or such. All you can do is to sort them out by alphabet or size... If I could organize the videos in some way this app would be flawless and I'd give it a five star.

The only app I like Most This one is really cool. Thanks for the developers. You are awesome Man!! I've used many video media player, but never equal to VLC Media Player, that makes it the only app I like most in the batch. The mobile version with locked interface prevents kids not to interrupt the play screen!! That's cool.

Why exit Why does it exit the app when I am not playing anything? Could you make it am option to stay open? It makes it annoying having to find the artist that I'm listening to again. The best app to use so far so I put up with it. Just letting you know Mr. VLC it can get frustrating

Minus 2 star Cant play HD vids. The video showing green scratches on screen but if i play it in my loptop. It plays well. So i guess your mobile vlc is not good in playing HD vid such as 1080p and above.

I love VLC 1. It's a great app, just not of my liking. It will play almost all formats, Looks good, 2. No adds. 3. The resume function woudn't work if opened from file browser(ES Explore). 4. As a Video & Audio player it messing up with my headset audio controls, which I don't like. Double tapping the button opens the VLC app. 5. I like using separate players for video and audio, for now..... So I am Quitting.

Cant play audio in background Is there a way to play audio in background? Poweamp has this feature. Vlc is also an audio player, so why the music stops in a call or whatsapp voice record?? Great Beautiful implementation of vlc on Android. Have used this a long time on Linux for the pc and this doesn't disappoint. One big annoyance - small-window videos, the player window will sometimes just close after some minutes. (Galaxy Tab A, Lollipop). And, yes, I understand this is a port from Linux, but a bit better adaptation to mobile platform is in order imho - player forgets last play point betw. closes/opens, & play speed goes back to 1x when bringing to fg or fullscreen. Otherwise 5-star app.

Leader! This is the leader of all media playback softwares. All praises. Few requests. Please provide sidebar with quick navigation, means you can slide the bar very fast and release it to the alphabet you want, like you do in contacts app. Also in the directories navigation mode, there is no option to sort files by date etc. Please add it.

I used beta I used beta because VLC is awesome and there was no final version. Now there is， but it fails a lot. Even basic stuff like play audio only for vide clips do not work any longer. I return to beta. Fix your app! Installed beta to see that no longer can read sd ... Dissapointed to 1 star now... Now can’t make in directory read mode play all by default. Only play 1 file and stops. Is anyone reading the reviews btw?

Bad App After the update the app doesn't load. If app not use for atleast 3 days the later when you open any video, only white sceen remains on the screen and sometimes it takes longer then 5min to load a video. It used to be my favourite player but now i don't even feel to give 1 star.

Index Please? Please index media files. Trying to load details on every multimedia file in my microSD card seems to crash my device (Samsung Note 4). Only when I try to open a .mkv file... Then I have to take the battery out of my phone because it froze... Maybe it's the codec? Strange though: the same .mkv files work on my PC at home with VLC. So I'm not too sure about this.

Poor Performance Previously VLC was my favourite video player but now days it crashes a lot. Every time i try to play something on it in first attempt it crashes and in second attempt it takes to much time to start. Now i have no other option then uninstalling VLC. Hope VLC team works on it.

A Couple of Instability Issues It crashes [after a few minutes] when I try browsing the web. It also doesn't shut down properly [using the swiping method]. So, I'd have to shut it down through my tablet's Settings app. It starts running on its own, too.

Only plays one file in a forder I downloaded this app to listen to a large set of short sound files for studying. I'd like the app play the files in a folder one after another. But it doesn't do that. It stops when the file ends. I have to start the next file manually. I hate that!

New update This new update is not good and also not working like old one. The is that it's taking more time for loading the video like I just open after some time I close it and if I again open it then it again loading and it's not taking one to two min and after loading it says no media file is found ! You have to correct it otherwise no will download it

2.0.6 is an update fixing crashes, updating codecs and saving the audio delay for BT headphones.

2.0 introduces a large number of features, notably network disk browsing (Windows shares, UPnP, NFS, SFTP...), favorite folders and URLs, video playlists, popup video, new permissions support, subtitles download, rewritten notifications and control, and a new history.

The Android TV and Android versions were merged, so that every device can get the updated Android TV look.
