Your questions, our answers

  • What is an Organization Validation (OV) SSL Certificate?

Organization Validation OV SSL Certificates assure visitors that they're on a website run by a legitimate business. Before we grant an OV Certificate, a member of our security staff verifies that the business listed on the application:

    • Exists under that name
    • Is at the address listed
    • Owns the domain name

We also contact the business to confirm that the owners actually requested the SSL Certificate. Our hands-on verification makes it highly unlikely that a thief or phisher could ever get an OV Certificate.

  • What does an OV SSL Certificate look like?

Any website protected by an OV SSL Certificate displays a small padlock and HTTPS prefix in the visitor's browser bar. Although it's not quite as eye-catching as the EV Certificate's green bar, it's reassuring to those who know to look for it before sharing private details online. These signs confirm that they're on an encrypted site and their data is safe.

  • What are the advantages of an OV SSL for your business?

An OV Certificate is manually vetted and is therefore unlikely to be awarded to a thief or hacker. Domain Validation (DV) Certificates don't provide this level of assurance, since the verification process is automated.

  • What's the difference between Organization Validation (OV), Extended Validation (EV) and Domain Validation (DV) Certificates?

Domain Validation (DV) Certificates are easiest of all the certificates to get. There's no manual identity check, only an automated verification that the applicant owns the domain behind the website. If you have a personal website or blog, a DV SSL Certificate is fine for you.

Organization Validation (OV) Certificates take security up a level and require human verification of the organization’s identity. The same is true for Extended Validation (EV) Certificates, which verify not just domain ownership but business identity, legal status and address. The vetting process for the EV cert is more in-depth than any of the other Certificates, so EV SSL Certificates give customers more confidence.
