Modern file formats
- An XML-based file format made document files smaller, more robust, and more integrated with information systems and external data sources.
- Excel 2007 also introduced a binary version of the segmented compressed file format for large or complex workbooks, used for performance and backward compatibility.
New user interface
- Office 2007 introduced the Office Fluent user interface, with the ribbon replacing menus and toolbars. Commands and features are easier to find on task-oriented tabs containing logical groups.
- The Quick Access toolbar provides access to your most frequently used commands in Excel, no matter which tab of the ribbon is active.
- The Office Button in the upper-left corner replaced the old File menu and contains basic file management commands.
Improved worksheet features and functions
- Galleries—including drop-down, grid layout, or embedded—let you apply quick formats directly to Excel worksheets, charts, and other objects.
- New functions like AVERAGEIF, AVERAGEIFS, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, and IFERROR enabled new capabilities in formulas and figure calculations.
- Improvements in color management and formatting options let you have as many colors in a workbook as you want. And design themes provide complementary color choices for a more professional look.
- New graphic and drawing capabilities in Office 2007 help you quickly create professional-looking charts—using a set of special tabs on the ribbon just for charts.
