@sosmediterranee is one of the two laureates of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize 2017. SOS Méditerranée is a civic, European organization for the rescue of people in distress in the Mediterranean. Since launching its rescue operation in February 2016, the organization has saved more than 11,000 lives.
Both SOS Méditerranée and Lampedusa's former Mayor, Giuseppina Nicolini, recieve this award for their work to save the lives of refugees and migrants and welcome them with dignity.

Ocean sciences are led by a small number of industrialized countries although collecting data and taking the measure of the ocean’s health is a global priority considering the economic and environmental stakes involved, according to the Global Ocean Science Report, compiled by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The Report advocates increased investment into research and calls for greater international scientific cooperation.
