Sight & Sound: San Jose Signs

Cities across the United States are saying, “Our signs matter!” From historic and cultural markers to key components in urban renewal initiatives, signs are being embraced as local art and symbols of community and a fundamental sense of place. Cities such as Glendale, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati have state-of-the-art sign museums. There are public displays of local signs in Bakersfield, Fresno, and Los Angeles. Self-guided driving tours of signs are available in Tucson, San Francisco, and San Jose. There are walking tours, guided bus tours, bike tours, and virtual tours, too. One thing is for certain: the sign is back, and it means much more to people than a form of advertising.

Real Weddings: Whitney + Tanner

Whitney and Tanner found one another while going to school at Westmont in Santa Barbara. At first, Tanner was strictly Whitney’s Greek tutor until, he fell for her contagious smile and wit! From California, Colorado, North Carolina and back, the couple dated for five years much of which was long distance. In the summer of 2016, while Tanner finished up a job in Durham, Whitney waited for him to meet her back in California. On the very last day of summer, for Tanner’s homecoming, the two explored Tanner’s hometown and stopped at their favorite spots along the way. That night they made plans to go to the fair with friends at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Surrounded by crowds of people and dancing lights, Tanner pulled Whitney into the closest photo booth. His good friend snuck the ring box into his hand on the way in. Between the first and second shot, Tanner turned to Whitney and asked her to marry him. By the third trip of the shutter Whitney was completely shocked. Before the final shot she had time to find composure, say “Yes!” and kiss her soon-to-be husband for the photo reel. They planned a garden party themed wedding for June 11th in the heart of one of Denver’s historic neighborhoods.

As Shanola explains, the fact that Shameless has been on the air for eight seasons means the show is experiencing a viewership renaissance. "It's an interesting thing when you do a show that's outside the box. And our show has been revived in a kind of way, because we have fans now that we didn't have before. It's almost as if the eighth season is like the first one all over again."

100 Percent Happy: Courtney Barnett Is Letting It All Go

When Courtney Barnett picks up the phone, it’s tomorrow. She’s eighteen hours ahead of me, in Melbourne, Australia, sitting in the front room of her house—the presumptive end result of a search that was chronicled in “Depreston,” a song from her 2015 solo LP, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, that describes a melancholy visit to a suburban open house. “And it’s going pretty cheap, you say?” she asks gently on that tune, switching back and forth between just two chords, keeping us moving along with a riff that’s perpetually forward, but inevitably sludgy—a riff that makes listening to the song feel a bit like trying to run through a pool of molasses in an otherwise pleasant dream. “Well, it’s a deceased estate,” explains a real estate agent, who trails off briefly before bringing things back to what really matters: “Aren’t the pressed metal ceilings great?”

The Intrepid Series: Uganda

WE’RE ABOUT TO take a walk in the woods. Assu is carrying an AK-47 in case we’re charged by forest elephants. The morning is heavy with tropical heat – a close, sweaty brew of vegetal scents and cicada-drone – and we have a six-hour jungle hike ahead of us. Assu slings his gun across his shoulder, starts walking and tells me that he’s an Arsenal fan. Insert your own joke about the quality of his shooting here.
