We Should Replace Facebook With Personal Websites... With G+ Shutting Down and More People Disillusioned with Facebook, There is No Single Big Alternative

An interesting post at the link below. So true that before Facebook we had the massive MySpace which "everybody" back then was on. Before that, we had our own sites and were many other smaller social networks. Why did Facebook manage to draw so many people into one central network, and why is there no big alternative emerging yet to draw everyone away from Facebook? Lots of smaller alternatives but each has its issues and no one of them is the major magnet that Facebook was back in the MySpace days.

The time is ripe! G+ announced its earlier shutdown due to two breaches, and Facebook are repeated breaches refuses to shutdown and the fact is many Facebook users would like some alternative.

I'm sure something will emerge as it always has in the past and the coming months would be the right time. The biggest question for me is will it be a big central service or will it be a strong fediverse type protocol binding together many decentralised social networks into a single virtual network. I'm hoping for the latter as it will cost less and will be the alternative people are seeking, and being a federation is could offer more choices and niches for networks to play in. It will also mean not moving into a new locked in central service.

This image shows what appears to be a large patch of fresh, untrodden snow – a dream for any lover of the holiday season. However, it’s a little too distant for a last-minute winter getaway: this feature, known as Korolev crater, is found on Mars, and is shown here in beautiful detail as seen by Mars Express.

ESA’s Mars Express mission launched on 2 June 2003, and reached Mars six months later. The satellite fired its main engine and entered orbit around the Red Planet on 25 December, making this month the 15-year anniversary of the spacecraft’s orbit insertion and the beginning of its science programme.

These images are an excellent celebration of such a milestone. Taken by the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), this view of Korolev crater comprises five different ‘strips’ that have been combined to form a single image, with each strip gathered over a different orbit. The crater is also shown in perspective, context, and topographic views, all of which offer a more complete view of the terrain in and around the crater.
