Firefox issue[edit]

I use a VPN for an online learning course because they rate limit connections from outside their country. They happily sell the courses to people outside of that country but the videos are unwatchable due to constant buffering from their content hoster. After i turned it on yesterday, I happened to come to wikipedia to edit today (VPN is off, I never edited wikipedia while it was enabled), and wikipedia says I'm caught in a range block. The VPN Is windscribe and I use their firefox browser plugin. I've verified the VPN is off, and even visited ipchicken and ipchicken shows the address that I'm currently editing from. I can even edit my own talk page, which seems to be a clear indication that wikipedia ses my correct address, yet, when I try to edit any other page on wikipedia it says I'm caught in a range block which doesn't match the current address I'm using, instead I see this message "Editing from 104.254.92.0/22 has been blocked (disabled) by ‪ST47‬ for the following reason(s):" I'm currently editing from Chrome, but chrome is not my main browser, so obviously my IP isn't actually blocked. I cleared cookies in firefox and restarted it, and I've triple checked, the VPN is turned off (otherwise Ipchicken wouldn't be showing this as my IP address). Any ideas?--125.129.16.99 (talk) 00:55, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

A quick search says that Windscribe is also a proxy in addition to VPN, so it may still be rerouting your traffic. Try removing the plugin and see if that makes it work again. RudolfRed (talk) 01:09, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
No change, completely removed the plugin, restarted the browser, it's still claiming I'm in that block. I've used windscribe tons of times in between editing wikipedia before, so I'm not sure why it thinks that now.--125.129.16.99 (talk) 01:13, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
@125.129.16.99: I'm confused. Your post above, and other edits to talk and article pages a few minutes earlier from the same IP address, were all successful. Are you saying that those are being done with a different browser (Chrome?) and that the problem occurs when you try to use Firefox? Does it also happen with a Firefox "Private window"? My experience with VPNs is limited to those that integrate with the network stack directly. Assuming it does happen in a "Private window", I'm guessing that the plugin needs to be disabled from somewhere in the Firefox settings (maybe by disabling it in the [about:addons Addons] config?). You may need to talk to the VPN's support people and/or remove/reinstall Firefox. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:34, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
That's correct. If I try to edit through firefox, which I've done numerous times, I get a message saying I'm blocked. These edits and the recent article edit are all being done via Chrome. In firefox my IP address is showing correctly when I visit websites that display my IP address (like ipchicken), and when I edit my talk page, the wikipedia system seems to be aware that I'm on this IP address (otherwise why would it let me edit that talk page?) but when I try to edit any other page, it claims I'm in a blocked range on firefox. The talk page edits were done in the firefox browser.--125.129.16.99 (talk) 02:35, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

As a further test here, I've reinstalled the windscribe plugin and tried to access wikipeda via various locations, just to see what happens. When I choose specific locations, the blocked messsage changes to match those locations. When I disconnect, it goes back to claiming I'm in this 104 IP block when I'm clearly not. This is very strange.--125.129.16.99 (talk) 05:05, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

I just solved this. Previously I called up the cookies in firefox, hit remove and then tried to access and it didn't work. this time I used the "save changes" button after removing the new cookies and got a different pop up. After doing that, I can now edit again via firefox. It seems like the cookies weren't properly being removed earlier, and this was a cookie problem.--125.129.16.99 (talk) 05:09, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

specific dead link scenario[edit]

hello wiki users. while editing the page for john edward robinson, i came across a specific citing issue i don't know how to fix. a specific source was cited multiple times on the page, but the link was down. i was able to find an archive of the page (and edited the citation accordingly), but only page 1 of the 16-page article was archived, meaning that most of the information on the wikipedia page cannot be verified. i don't want to list it as a dead link, as there is still one page; should i just remove the citation on information that is no longer available, or is there a way to list a link as partially dead? thank you so much for your help :) --Vaporwaveboyfriend (talk) 02:38, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

@Vaporwaveboyfriend: Fixed I've replaced the archive url with a better, complete one from archive.org. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 03:50, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

I strongly oppose the betrayal of jesus christ by wikipedia. Michael Nicholson[edit]

Hi, I have tried to submit a listing on Wiki, but have been disappointed to get mutliple replies that are quite angry actually. Is it possible to correspond with someone who is a bit more sympathetic to my cause please? In my submission below l have tried very hard to take all the right steps and follow the various guidelines. Regards, Mike.

Michael Nicholson [Film maker]

Michael John Nicholson I would suggest that you not attempt to write about yourself, while not forbidden, it is strongly discouraged per the autobiography policy(please review). Wikipedia, to be frank, is not interested in what someone wants to say about themselves, but only in what independent reliable sources have chosen on their own to say about someone, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. Specifically, in your case, the definintion of a notable creative professional. Most people have great difficulty in writing about themselves as if they know nothing about themselves other than what they read in the news or other reputable, independent reliable sources. If you truly meet the definition of a notable creative professional and are written about significantly in independent sources, an independent editor will eventually take note of your career and choose to write about you.
I would also note that a Wikipedia article about yourself is not necessarily desirable; there are good reasons to not want one. 331dot (talk) 11:59, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
You have been repeatedly told how to do this, or more appropriately, how not to, if you are notable someone unconnected with you will write an article, your sources above suggest that you are NOT notable yet, please stop spamming Wikipedia with your requests. Theroadislong (talk) 12:03, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
  • OP's actions:
    - "Can I have an article?"
    - "How much do I have to pay to have an article?"
    - "But there's an article about my brother!"
    - Attempting an article about himself (that wouldn't even make it to AfD) in all the wrong places.
    - Ignoring every explanation along the way as to where he's going wrong.
I have plugged this timesink. If OP shows the slightest interest in working on anything else, unblock him. If he even indicates that he wants write about himself but will actually pay attention to what people say instead of just begging for us to do it and pointing to articles that also need to be deleted, sure, I'm not gonna wheel-war if you unblock him. @KanaKaNn:, I assume the article in question is Russo-Turkish War (1676–1681)? It looks like there has been a slow burning edit war over if the infobox should say "Ottoman victory" or "indecisive" since 2016, so about 4 years now. Prior to 2015, the result field in the infobox just linked to Treaty of Bakhchisarai. In November of 2015, Kansas Bear added the "indecisive" label citing A Military History of Russia: From Ivan the Terrible to the War in Chechnya, (Greenwood Publishing, 2006), 41;"The indecisive Russo-Turkish War from 1676-1681 centered on the control of the fortress of Chigirin, just west of the Dnepr River." In January 2016 an IP user changed it to "decisive Ottoman Victory" without changing the "cited" source. In 2017 Historiker123454 was blocked for 31 hours for edit warring on the same article, presenting the same source you cite above in very similar language. Out of curiosity, are you the same person as Historiker123454? If so and you've just forgotten your password or something, I suggest you make a note of that on your userpage. Please note, that what other Wikipedias say has no bearing on what the English Wikipedia says. I reccomend you visit Talk:Russo-Turkish War (1676–1681), present the Brian Davies source and any other academic sources you have that support your position (i.e. not other Wikipedias), and see if you can build consensus for your position, perhaps with a WP:RFC. In the alternative, if there actually is scholarly disagreement about the result of that war, the best thing might be to return the infobox to its pre 2015 state where it just said Treaty of Bakhchisarai in the result field. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:01, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
Actually, this editor has used different accounts, namely;Hakan255, Historiker123454, and 45.136.170.188 to edit war since they are unable to provide a quote from Davies, Brian L., Warfare, state and society on the Black Sea steppe, 1500-1700, Routledge, 2007 page number 172.
Since they have been unable to edit war their opinion into the article, they have resorted to posting battleground comments throughout Wikipedia.
FYI, I'm not Russian and my flag is the flag of Scotland. Click on the link and that is what it says. Pretty much done with trolls, battleground comments, and PAs(accusation of sockpuppetry)! --Kansas Bear (talk) 16:23, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Correct mis-named uploaded image[edit]

Re: Commons Wikimedia File:Sandra Cason ("Casey" Hayden).jpg. Some time ago I uploaded a police mug shot which I mistakenly identified as being that of Casey Hayden. It is actually a picture of another 1960s-era civil rights activist Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, and I have since placed as an image in her Wiki entry. But it is still identified on Commons Wikimedia as Sandra Cason ("Casey" Hayden) and so comes up in general browser image searches under her name. How can I correct this--go back into Wikimedia and rename, or delete and reload as Joan Trumpauer Mulholland?

yes; due to the size of the article, I get WMF error 503 errors. The LEVEL1

markers are workarounds to a problem that a reboot in the summer was supposed to fix. "503" is lumped into "500s" errors, and they're not high prio for fixing. I did "cohosts" without a problem - which may be why fixing the not-always "503" is low prio. something new - I'm getting 502, not 503. I never got a 502 before.

'sevens' served their purpose, and 'beyond' for now might as well also go: The "strike" keyword (Citation Needed) is hitting too many "right to strike" hits (Google). Vandalism help request from PunkAndromeda[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at Brianna Hildebrand. Namely, continued edits in Arabic and edits including links to Qasem Soleimani which are entirely unrelated, unsourced, and frankly make no sense - in the page, history, these edits have been made by the IP addresses 5.124.173.156, 5.124.94.227, 5.22.65.194 and 5.22.62.52. @PunkAndromeda: If the disruption continues you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. If the individual IP addresses are continuing to vandalise they can be reported at WP:AIV. Hello IP, I dont have TFA enabled, but I guess this should be the way:
  1. go to Special:UserLogin
  2. enter your account's username and password.
  3. next, you will be propmpted to enter a security code form your app. enter one of the scratch codes instead.
  4. Once you are logged in, go to Special:OAuth to disable 2fa temporarely. You need another scratch code for that.
Once you are done with that, you can reenable tfa for your new device. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 10:27, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Just in case anyone else references this discussion in the future, the login issue was resolved by entering the scratch code in all caps, since it is case-sensitive. Iqoo is a subsidiary brand of bbk electronics and i really want to create a page on it to contribute to Wikipedia as i have learned a lot from Wikipedia and now in return i also want to help in growing the amount of information it shares to millions or maybe billions of users worldwide. Feel happy to answer 🙂 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shroej (talkcontribs) 13:16, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Shroej If it's a subsidiary, it might be better to start by additions to the article on the parent company(if there is one) before determining if the subsidiary warrants a separate article. The subsidiary would need to receive significant coverage(not press releases, staff interviews, announcements of routine business transactions, etc.) in independent reliable sources showing how the subsidiary meets the Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. 331dot (talk) 13:19, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@Shroej: Please also take note of WP:COI and WP:PAID if you have any relation to the company. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 13:33, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Rights[edit]

Hello! Is it possible to assign a right if it is already in the Russian Wikipedia? I have the Autopatrolled, Rollback and Page mover already (I have ~1460 edits) Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 14:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

@Vova WIFI: In general, I think permissions on en.wiki should be based on experience on en.wiki, which likely has different standards, interpretations, expectations, and overall zeitgeist. I would certainly not assign autopatrolled or page mover without significant en.wiki experience. Personally, I'd be willing to assign rollback because the consequences of misuse are pretty small, and it can be removed easily. This isn't really the place to request it, but I'll cut through the bureaucracy and do it myself after I wait a bit to see if anyone objects to that. --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:51, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry, Vova WIFI, for speaking too soon. When I look at WP:RFP/R, I see people with decent amounts of experience on en.wiki still getting rejected for rollback because they don't have enough experience reverting vandalism. While I disagree with this approach, and think we should hand out rollback like candy (and take it away like candy if misused) , I probably shouldn't overrule what appears to be our consensus on that. I would say you have a better chance getting rollback than the other two rights, but it's still not likely, and if you want to try, you'll need to request it at WP:RFP/R. --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:57, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Floquenbeam, thanks! So I need to go to a special page and request there and specify my reason?
  • I need Autopatrolled to nominate files for renaming so that the patrollers don't have to check it. Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 15:08, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vova WIFI: If you go to WP:Requests for permissions, it lists the user groups, what is generally expected before being granted (for example, autopatrolled typically requires creating 25 new articles), and gives an "add request" link after each permission. You have to request each one separately. I think it is unlikely you'll be given autopatrolled. It is possible a rollback request will succeed, I don't know. But that's where you ask. --Floquenbeam (talk) 15:17, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks! I'll go to the special page. What impossible rules for Autopatrolled - in the Russian Wikipedia, you only need 100 edits. And what about Extended confirmed? It needs 500 edits... Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 15:23, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vova WIFI: As a seperate issue, your user name appears to violate the English Wikipedia's prohibition against using a corporate name. Please see WP:USERNAME. This may affect an adiminstrator's decision to grant you permissions. -Arch dude (talk) 16:04, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vova WIFI: The specific point is in the WP:ISU section. I thought it was a corporate name (or perhaps the name of a product) when I Googled for it and found this. If it's not a corporate name, you should be OK, but you might want to explain it on your user page. -Arch dude (talk) 16:39, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vova WIFI:You are free to also create a user page here at the English Wikipedia, and since this issue may involve a rule that is specific to this Wikipedia, it would be a good idea. -Arch dude (talk) 01:36, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
  • It is true that on other language versions(I'm aware of the German one as one) that business names/accounts are permitted and even encouraged, but they are not allowed here on the English Wikipedia. This was made more complicated when usernames were made global(across all versions of Wikipedia). Here, a username must reflect that a specific person is exclusively operating an account and granting no one else access to it. 331dot (talk) 16:46, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
  • It's true. I asked a russian bureaucrat to change my name from the one I use to sign up for the real one. Okay, I'll create a page here, but I'll indicate that my main account is ruwiki and give you a link to it. By the way, advertising names are also prohibited in Russian Wikipedia, but there were no questions for me. Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 06:15, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Wrong Redirect from Cryptojacking to Monero[edit]

People keep adding the redirect from Cryptojacking to the Cryptocurrency "Monero": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cryptojacking&redirect=no

This is similar as redirecting from "Fraud" to "US Dollar". Should I just revert it again? Is it possible to do anything to prevent people from reverting? --MartinThoma (talk) 16:02, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

MartinThoma If this is a habitual problem, you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. 331dot (talk) 16:15, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi MartinThoma. It seems like other users are reverting your addition because we don't usually keep articles which are just a dictionary definition, and they're restoring the redirect to Monero because that's the most recent topic it redirected to. If you're planning to create a separate article or section on cryptojacking, why don't you try writing it at Draft:Cryptojacking? That will give you more space to work, and when you think your draft is ready you can ask for it to be moved over the cryptojacking redirect. I see that the redirect actually points to a section that doesn't exist (it did when the redirect was created in 2017) so we'll have to do something about that too. I'll send you a discussion link in a few minutes. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:19, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
@MartinThoma: we have a process called redirects for discussion where you can nominate a redirect to discuss doing something different with it, including deletion. I've nominated this redirect at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 October 2#Cryptojacking. You're welcome to participate in that discussion. Help for page creation[edit]

Hi I am trying to get on the internet with my wikipedia page how can i do that — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex Sylber (talkcontribs) 16:52, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

If you need help with your user page, see WP:USERPAGE. If you wish to have a Wikipedia article about yourself, you will first need to do stuff in the real world to make yourself notable by our definition: see WP:N and WP:AMOUNT. You can have a page on the internet at any of several other web sites: see WP:OUT. If none of these cover your issue, then come back here and we can try to help. -Arch dude (talk) 17:02, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict)@Alex Sylber: I assume that you meant to ask "How can I create a Wikipedia article about me?" (not yust page). Please note that autobiographys are strongely discouraged (but not forbidden) and that there are reasons why one might not want a Wikipedia article. Next, please be advised that even if you were to manage to create an article, it would not be "your" page, but Wikipedia's page about you. If you dont want others to contribute, consider alternative outlets. If you are still sure that you want to create the article, follow this guide by User Ian.thomson on articles that wont be deleted or rejected. Victor Schmidt (talk) 17:06, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Citing paragraphs in a document[edit]

Hi. I've been expanding the Rukhsana Naz article, and I've used the same reference on multiple occasions, I know how to use named references and I've got the gist of short citations when I'm citing a book so I can specify page numbers - but this is a long document with 38 paragraphs and the pages aren't numbered. So... I was just wondering if there's a way to cite the paragraph number in a similar way to using short citations for pages? Might not really be necessary, but I figured it'd be more user friendly than just referencing the whole document. :) I'd be grateful for any direction. Thank you. --DSQ (talk) 13:40, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@DeltaSnowQueen: one way is to use the {{rp}} template. Its parameter can be any text, not just a page number. <ref name = foo>The Documented TRUTH</ref>{{rp|para 13}}.[1]:para 13. Really.[1]:para 15 -Arch dude (talk) 15:17, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Top tourist destination in the world[edit]

I have looked at your site and it is clearly wrong. Everyone and I mean everyone knows France is number one and you show Pakistan? France doesnt even show at all. Clearly nonsense. But it shows as number one on your Europe list. With the correct figure and Pakistan shows correctly under Asia.
