Geisha (coffee)
Geisha, sometimes referred to as Gesha, is a variety of coffee[1] discovered in Gesha, Ethiopia.[2] It is considered to produce a very aromatic and floral cup of coffee and the demand for it has grown in recent years.[1]
History[edit]
Coffee production in Ethiopia dates back dozens of centuries. The Geisha variety of Coffea arabica was identifies in the 1930s, in the mountainous Gesha region of southwestern Ethiopia.[2] After seeds were collected in 1936 by a British consul, the coffee was planted in Tanzania and Costa Rica.[3] From there, cultivation spread to Panama in the 1960s, including the famed Boquete region.[2]
Auction prices[edit]
It gained prominence and popularity in 2004, when Hacienda La Esmeralda[4] entered the Best of Panama coffee competition with a lot of Geisha that proved to be very unusual and distinct, attracting a record price of $21/per pound.[5][1] The latest accomplishment by Panama Geisha coffee occurred at the Best of Panama auction in 2019,[6] where a lot of Geisha coffee, produced by "The Lamastus Family Estates,"[7] sold for $1029/per pound (unroasted). Referred to later as "Elida Natural Geisha 1029," it has been sold in different coffee shops all around the world for prices of $100 for 18 grams,[8] about $100 a cup or $2522/ per pound roasted, making it the most expensive coffee in the world.[9] At the auction 100 lbs of coffee fetched $102,900.[10]
