Can't reset password

Hello IP, I would not recommend telling us that since you'd be exposing the IP of your account. If you don't receive a password reset email and it's not in your spam folder, there's nothing we can do, you'll just have to create a new account. – Thjarkur (talk) 11:46, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

I recently had an issue with not receiving the password reset email also, I tried it on another laptop and it sent, I think it was some issue to do with my work laptop blocking ports or using a VPN or something. So please try using another device. John Cummings (talk) 12:17, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

@Nilochlainn: Ummm, the link from Pppery is to change your password for Wikipedia. The way I read the question, Google was purportedly telling you that your Google account password had been compromised. If so, we cannot help you here at the English Wikipedia help desk. You need to contact Google. Be aware that there are scams that send emails like that, so make sure you are going to your Google account via however you normally get there (or just go to support.google.com for help), and not via a link in the email (which could be malicious). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:57, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Translation of Official EU (DG EMPL) Created Page

Hi there,

We've been tasked with the translation of the following page from Swedish into German/English/Portuguese and French (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europ%C3%A4ische_S%C3%A4ule_sozialer_Rechte)

This task comes as an official (contracted) element as part of DG EMPL's push to ensure that the Social Rights page is accessible to as many people as possible.

DG EMPL themselves have created this page (currently in Swedish) themselves. Usually we go through a subcontractor who does not use machine translations to do this. Is this how would be done?

Hello, Sam. I'm afraid that the people who tasked you have a misunderstanding of Wikipedia. There is no such thing as an "official" Wikipedia page. Wikipedia's article about your organisation does not belong to your organisation, you do not control its contents, and you are not responsible for creating or maintaining it.

Each language edition of Wikipedia is a separate project, with its own rules, which sometimes vary: I can only tell you about English Wikipedia; but I suspect that the others have similar rules and policies in this area. In English Wikipedia, if you intend to work on an article about an organisation which employs you, you must make a formal declaration of your status as a paid editor, and you should not edit the article directly, but should make edit request on the article's Talk page, so that an uninvolved editor may decide what action is appropriate. To create an article where you have a conflict of interest, even a translation, you should use the articles for creation process, and get it reviewed before it is released into the main encyclopaedia.

Hi Colin. Those were my understandings as well - I am well aware that Wikipedia does not belong to any organisation. I only intent to try and follow the rules that Wikipedia has (as you've outlined) to fulfil a request by DG EMPL (and thereby the European Commission in general, who I believe must have had some involvement in the creation of the original German page). I do not think machine translations are adequate for this, and therefore I we will always translate 'official' EU material professionally - even if this thereby creates a conflict of interest within the policy of Wikipedia - which I will state when submitting the new pages. Thank you for outlining the process and the ways of doing things, which I must admit is very different to what we usually work with! I'll get the pages translated and then submit it for review (along with all of the conflict of interest policies, such as the formal declaration as a paid editor). Does this seem like the logical course of action? Again the page in German already exists, and this is the basis for the translated material.

Since you are editing as part of your job, your first step should be to register an account (one for each person who works on this - you may not share a single account between multiple people), and make the disclosures outlined at WP:PAID. You can then work on something in draft space and submit it for review. If you are translating content published elsewhere (even a foreign language Wikipedia page), it must be attributed properly, and it must have been released under an appropriate licence - see WP:COPYVIO for more on that. One more thing you should note, Sam. Because different Wikipedias have different policies, the translation of an article from one edition won't necessarily be acceptable to another. In particular, I am not sure that enough of the references in de:Europäische Säule sozialer Rechte are independent of the society and give it significant coverage to establish that it meets en-wiki's criteria for notability. Hello all. I need to implement "Twinkle" for the first time ever; and I know that I am unsure how to do it correctly. @Maineartists you don't need twinkle to revert the last few changes. You can select your preferred version, select edit source, get the warning "You are editing an old revision of this page. If you publish it, any changes made since then will be removed. You may wish to edit the current revision instead" add a suitable edit summary and select publish changes to restore the old version. However I have reviewed the IP editor's changes and they are mostly moving existing content around and quoting a review from the New York Times with a reference. It is a matter of opinion whether the changes improve the article or not. TSventon (talk) 13:32, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

If you mean Louise Goodman the motorsport commentator, I have just done a quick search and did not return any hits to say that she had died. Her birth date is also missing(?) @HeartGlow30797: BTW, the infobox is just supposed to summarize facts that are present in the rest of the article. I.e, the dates and places of birth and death, if present, should first be in the prose of the article. They should then be in the lead sentence in parentheses after the subject's name. If there is an infobox, they can also be added there. Eddie Van Halen is a decent example.

Foreign language template

I seem to recall that there was a template I've seen around WP that says (ru) or (de) or (fr) to denote that a particular document/reference is in Russian, German, French, etc? ​I think I recall that template having been deleted this summer but I'm not quite sure. If you're writing references in plaintext you can use {{in lang}} which gives the longer and clearer "(in Russian)". Having two non-free images to illustrate an article

I'm currently working on the article Cheshire Crossing. This is a comic originally illustrated by one artist, then re-illustrated by another. The article talks a lot about how the original art was terrible, and how a new illustrator was brought in on an updated version.

Currently, the article has one non-free image, the cover of the new version. I want to also have, somewhere in the article, a cover from the original run, to allow a reader to see the art that is talked about so much. However, from what I can gather, cover art can only be used as a non-free image can only be used if it "will be shown as a primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the work in question." I'm presuming there can't be two "primary means of visual identification". Does this mean I can only have one non-free cover? Could I make one image which combines the two? What are my options? You can use a copyrighted work under under the free use doctrine if the work itself is being discussed, and not merely being used to illustrate a publication as we do with the cover. Your problem will be navigating our minefield of restrictions to justify applying this doctrine. Question about comma usage

I'm uncertain about what to do in a sentence with a phrasing like "... and because of [event], [result] occurred." Could anyone please tell me if the comma should be there? @Thylacine24: In my experience, unless you're rewriting your own work, or doing a substantial rewrite anyway, some (especially the original writer) might regard editing of optional commas (i.e., those without a bright-line reason to be or not) as annoying or even disruptive if done in volume. Editing commas required (or more rarely, not) by the MoS or standard grammar, or necessary to resolve ambiguity, are, of course, OK. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Skimming through that section, I don't think it does, though the examples involving Burke and Wills may. @Thylacine24: That would be beyond the scope of the MoS (as well as my knowledge). Unless someone else wants to make a strong case one way or the other, it's up to you. Comma might have something useful. If you ask at WT:MOS, they'll probably tell you it's a grammar question, but might point you to the right place to discuss it, which I can't seem to find. 4nn1l2, I don't know what discussion you are referring to, and if it's that you're looking for specifically, I'm afraid I won't be able to help you. WP:UP#CMT, as policy, states that

Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred.

I'm sure there was a discussion and a following consensus which allowed removing bot-archival notices about dead links by cyberbot II and InternetArchiveBot but not in a systematic manner (i.e. not by another bot or in a large amount). wiki article on Makau W. Mutua - personal vendetta

I noticed that the article on Kenyan-American law professor Makau W. Mutua https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makau_W._Mutua has been incrementally changed over several months by an unregistered user who transformed it into a biased, one sided and slanderous article that does not meet BLP standards. Makau W. Mutua's professional and academic achievements are barely mentioned or removed. The references used are weak. The article is emphasizing law suits and grievances of faculty members at his university and relies heavily on "negatives". It looks like a personal vendetta piece. "Undoing" is impossible because there have been too many changes made. And I am rather new to Wikipedia and not very experienced as an editor. Could this page be put under "clean-up" or get a special notice box?

The OP has twice edited it, once to replace a referenced paragraph with a shorter, unreferenced, paragraph in Russian; and after that was reverted, to replace the paragaph with the words "In proces...", presumably meaning they are intending to replace it again.

@Enciclopedista100: There are three interrelated issues. 1) You must formally attribute the Spanish article to comply with its CC-BY-SA license. Do this on the talk page and/or in one or more edit summaries. 2) The back-link to the Spanish article will occur when you (or someone) updates the Wikidata item for the article, which will point to the article in each language Wikipedia . 3) you cannot use the Spanish article as a reference, since Wikipedia is not a reliable source by our own definition. First, please have a look at WP:REFNAME about named references. It allows you to use the same reference on multiple places. You don't, because you are a paid editor with a conflict of interest. See WP:PAID and WP:COI. Your company should have an article here at Wikipedia if and only if it is notable by our definition: see WP:NCORP. This is easy to mess up: see WP:CSMN. If, after carefully reviewing these, you feel sure your company really is notable, then create an account with a personal (not corporate) username WP:USERNAME, declare your paid status WP:PAID, identify about three rock-solid references WP:CSMN, and proceed to WP:YFA to build a draft article. Your draft will be reviewed, with a special attention to notability. If those references are not adequate, your efforts will be wasted and you will be frustrated, and your only recourse will be to make your company more notable in the real world: see WP:AMOUNT. I would add to the good explanation above that if and when the article(not just a "page") is accepted, you would no longer be able to edit it directly; you would need to make edit requests. Hearnedorothy First, you must review the conflict of interest policy, as well as paid editing for information on formal disclosures you may be required to make. Wikipedia is not a place for businesses to tell the world about themselves and/or aid search results for them. This is an encyclopedia that has articles, not mere "pages". Those articles must summarize what independent reliable sources] with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about(in this case) a business, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable business. "Significant coverage" does not include press releases, the company website, staff interviews, announcement of routine business transactions like the raising of capital or opening of locations, or other primary sources.

Your use of the term "startup" strongly suggests that your business does not yet meet the notability criteria; new businesses rarely do. A business must generally already be established to merit a Wikipedia article. An article might sound great for your business, but it is actually not necessarily desirable. See WP:MOVE for more information. Please note that changing the file name in the markup means that the image will not display as it it will then link to a file that does not exist. @GavfaeDundee: I suspect this was reverted as Serols considered it misplaced at the top of the infobox. The name there would typically match the article title. If the translation was placed in the lead after the boldname say, in brackets, 'English, XXXXX', I think that would probably be acceptable. The editor concerned is one of Wikipedia's experienced and prolific disruption fighters and will often use automated tools fo find problems. This *can* lead to mis-identification and the tools are not really for use when it comes to good faith edits. Yes your edit was OK, but asking User:Serols to elaborate is going to be up to you.

It was OK, but it wasn't faultless, because you didn't provide a reference, and also because it would probably better to put it in the body of the text like this: "Aonach Shasuinn (English: Hill of the Saxon; 888 m) is..."

According the key rule WP:BRD, the usual sequence is supposed to be:

1) You make your edit, as you did, and as is right and proper.

2) Another editor (User:Serols in this case) reverts it, as is their right.

3) You accept the reversion for the time being and open up a thread on the article's talk page giving your reasons for your edit and asking for discussion.

4) If and when there's general agreement that your original edit was OK, you put it back; if not, then not.

User:Serols ought to have given an edit summary explaining why he reverted your edit, but he didn't, and it's not strictly required. Your next step is then is the article talk page.

If no one else engages, which could happen as its a rather obscure article -- if neither User:Serols nor anyone else provides a reason that your edit shouldn't stand -- then after a reasonable time (10 days maybe?) well then User:Serols has had her chance, and you're justified in re-adding your edit. You should note in the talk page thread "no objection having been offered, I'm restoring the edit" or something.

Keep in mind that if you should provide a reference, and if you don't the material will probably be tagged for deletion and eventually deleted anyway, though.

That is a category, which groups together like articles, not a list. If the company meets the Wikipedia definition of a notable company, and receives significant coverage in independent reliable sources, it would merit an article that summarizes those sources. I don't know if this is a bug or if we need to write a phab ticket, but the word "Main Page" (specifically with a capital M and a capital P) followed by any number of everyday symbols or punctuation will hide the title. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page%24 for an example of the title "Main Page$". Also, the title "Main Page." (followed by a period) at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page.&redirect=no also has a hidden title. It seems like the title is automatically hidden for whatever unknown reason. @Gioguch: I investigated, it seems to be a problem of MediaWiki and the way how the title is hidden. Explanation: Whenever you load a page, mediaWiki will attach a CSS class to the <body>-Element that takes the form "page-normalised Page Name". Because Special Characters are not allowed in CSS classes, MediaWiki Will remove them and replace spaces with underscores. Therefore, both the class for Main Page and Main Page. will end up page-Main_Page the logic which hides the title is contained within MediaWiki:Common.css and is basically the following: Whenever you see a Element with the class ".page-MainPage", hide child elements with the id #firstHeading (which is the page title). @Victor Schmidt mobil: Ok, but when you go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page%24&mobileaction=toggle_view_mobile, which is the mobile view version for "Main Page$", it doesn't hide the title nor show "Welcome, (your username)!" It actually shows the title. But how come the CSS class you were talking about only works for desktop view, not for mobile view? Or is it another bug? Gioguch (talk) 15:26, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

I know of no program called "Wikipedia Gifting". You are probably the victim of a scam. Since it is a very bad idea to share your contact details on an open forum like this one, you may choose to pursue this with e-mail with the Wikimedia Foundation (the organization that runs the Wikipedia system), but I fear that they will not have any information about the scammers. Try an e-mail to info@wikimedia.org to ask who to contact, but do not provide any financial info such as credit card or bank account numbers until you are sure you are in contact with the correct people. -Arch dude (talk) 08:05, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Title of actor credited under different names

Scenario: Actor has been going by a certain name for a while, most of the links to the page are under that name, has a Google knowledge panel, etc. Recently/currently, they have started going by a stage name. Would it be right to have the page be titled the current/recent name they go by, or the name they have mostly been credited as up until now?

Page in question: Odessa A'zion (stage name) / Odessa Adlon (real name)

@Starklinson: Generally we go by WP:COMMONNAME, so if she had just recently switched, most of the reliable sources would still refer to her by her birthname which we would leave as the title (her stage name can be added to the body of the article, though). @Yogibur: Generally, the first thing you should do is find out who owns the copyright (if it isn't you) and either way, under which license you will license it (for your own files, not files downloaded from the internet) or under which license they are (for files where you are not the copyright holder). @Geniusgracious: first, make sure your organization is notable by our definition (see WP:NCORP) by finding a few really good references. This is easy to mess up: see WP:CSMN. Then, add those references to your draft, and add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the draft. this will provide a "submit" button. Read through WP:YFA before you hit that button, or you are likely to have your submission declined.
