Having two non-free images to illustrate an article[edit]
I'm currently working on the article Cheshire Crossing. This is a comic originally illustrated by one artist, then re-illustrated by another. The article talks a lot about how the original art was terrible, and how a new illustrator was brought in on an updated version.
Currently, the article has one non-free image, the cover of the new version. I want to also have, somewhere in the article, a cover from the original run, to allow a reader to see the art that is talked about so much. However, from what I can gather, cover art can only be used as a non-free image can only be used if it "will be shown as a primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the work in question." I'm presuming there can't be two "primary means of visual identification". Does this mean I can only have one non-free cover? Could I make one image which combines the two? What are my options? HenryCrun15 (talk) 02:41, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- @HenryCrun15: My reading of WP:NFCC item 3a is that you can have more than one, if one is not enough to convey the needed info. RudolfRed (talk) 03:31, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) @HenryCrun15: This is not the simple "use the cover once" case. There is another free-use rationale that applies here. You can use a copyrighted work under under the free use doctrine if the work itself is being discussed, and not merely being used to illustrate a publication as we do with the cover. Your problem will be navigating our minefield of restrictions to justify applying this doctrine. Please document your argument for using the work, both in in the file description and in the article's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 03:41, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Question about comma usage[edit]
I'm uncertain about what to do in a sentence with a phrasing like "... and because of [event], [result] occurred." Could anyone please tell me if the comma should be there? Could anyone also please tell me if the tense of the verb, in this case "occurred", matters in regards to comma usage?--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:44, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- The comma can be there. I personally wouldn't use this phrasing for encyclopedic writing, but it is correct grammar. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:08, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Tenryuu: Okay, thanks. I won't, then. Could you please tell me if you think I should remove the comma in any sentences where it occurs in this fashion?--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:07, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- I agree with Tenryuu. Note in particular that unless the sources specifically say that Y occured because of X, the statement "because of X, Y occurred" is original research. --ColinFine (talk) 11:36, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- @ColinFine: Thanks, but I'm not talking about the factuality behind such statements, just the grammar of them. (Sorry to phrase that sentence rudely.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:07, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: In my experience, unless you're rewriting your own work, or doing a substantial rewrite anyway, some (especially the original writer) might regard editing of optional commas (i.e., those without a bright-line reason to be or not) as annoying or even disruptive if done in volume. Editing commas required (or more rarely, not) by the MoS or standard grammar, or necessary to resolve ambiguity, are, of course, OK. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @AlanM1: Could you please tell me if the MOS covers the type of comma usage I've brought up here? Skimming through that section, I don't think it does, though the examples involving Burke and Wills may. (I ignored the "serial comma" section, which I don't think has anything to do with what I'm talking about; sorry.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 01:14, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: That would be beyond the scope of the MoS (as well as my knowledge). Unless someone else wants to make a strong case one way or the other, it's up to you. Comma might have something useful. If you ask at WT:MOS, they'll probably tell you it's a grammar question, but might point you to the right place to discuss it, which I can't seem to find. Maybe ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Grammar if you must, though it's pretty quiet. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @AlanM1: Thanks, I'll look into it.--Thylacine24 (talk) 01:59, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

wiki article on Makau W. Mutua - personal vendetta[edit]
I noticed that the article on Kenyan-American law professor Makau W. Mutua https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makau_W._Mutua has been incrementally changed over several months by an unregistered user who transformed it into a biased, one sided and slanderous article that does not meet BLP standards. Makau W. Mutua's professional and academic achievements are barely mentioned or removed. The references used are weak. The article is emphasizing law suits and grievances of faculty members at his university and relies heavily on "negatives". It looks like a personal vendetta piece. "Undoing" is impossible because there have been too many changes made. And I am rather new to Wikipedia and not very experienced as an editor. Could this page be put under "clean-up" or get a special notice box?

- No, this is about the English article Stanley Meyer's water fuel cell. The OP has twice edited it, once to replace a referenced paragraph with a shorter, unreferenced, paragraph in Russian; and after that was reverted, to replace the paragaph with the words "In proces...", presumably meaning they are intending to replace it again.

Translation of a Wikipedia Article[edit]
Good afternoon,
I am wiring about this article on Wikipedia English about the 21st Century Icon Awards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:21st_Century_Icon_Awards
I would like to know if it is necessary to mention that this is meant to be a translation from the same article which already exists in Wikipedia Spanish. Under this name, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premios_Icono_del_Siglo_XXI or it is not relevant to mention that this is a translation. I just want add the link from Wikipedia Spanish in the languages section but the system doesn't allow me. In that case, how can I let know the experienced editor who will decide whether it should publish or not in Wikipedia English that it has already the same article in Wikipedia Spanish? Can you help me with this please?
Thank you.--Enciclopedista100 (talk) 19:38, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

- @Enciclopedista100: There are three interrelated issues. 1) You must formally attribute the Spanish article to comply with its CC-BY-SA license. Do this on the talk page and/or in one or more edit summaries. 2) The back-link to the Spanish article will occur when you (or someone) updates the Wikidata item for the article, which will point to the article in each language Wikipedia . 3) you cannot use the Spanish article as a reference, since Wikipedia is not a reliable source by our own definition. You will need to use the references that the Spanish article uses. It's OK if the references are in Spanish. -Arch dude (talk) 20:03, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

At www.eex-transparency.com, visitors can gain access to comprehensive fundamental data and relevant information for wholesale energy trading. The website is a further development of the existing platform "Transparency in Energy Market" and contains information about capacity, utilization and availability of facilities for the production of electricity as well as new information on the storage of electricity and natural gas consumption.
- @Ursula Goetze: Also note "secure, liquid and transparent markets" in the lede of the article. These may be correct technical terms in the context of your industry, but they look like WP:PEACOCK terms to a general reader. Perhaps use a more general NPOV like "services", and then define these services for the general reader later in the article. -Arch dude (talk) 16:44, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

How to Create Company Wikipedia Page?[edit]
Hello,
I'm going through the all the information available and am curious if there are any specific instructions with regards to creating a COMPANY Wikipedia page. Are there any restrictions, guidelines, etc?
Please advise - thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:648:8101:B3F0:4D2C:F4BB:1A1B:E72D (talk) 15:22, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- You don't, because you are a paid editor with a conflict of interest. See WP:PAID and WP:COI. Your company should have an article here at Wikipedia if and only if it is notable by our definition: see WP:NCORP. This is easy to mess up: see WP:CSMN. If, after carefully reviewing these, you feel sure your company really is notable, then create an account with a personal (not corporate) username WP:USERNAME, declare your paid status WP:PAID, identify about three rock-solid references WP:CSMN, and proceed to WP:YFA to build a draft article. Your draft will be reviewed, with a special attention to notability. If those references are not adequate, your efforts will be wasted and you will be frustrated, and your only recourse will be to make your company more notable in the real world: see WP:AMOUNT. Please come back here for specific help if needed. -Arch dude (talk) 15:36, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- I would add to the good explanation above that if and when the article(not just a "page") is accepted, you would no longer be able to edit it directly; you would need to make edit requests. Wikipedia is only interested in what others say about a company, not what it wants to say about itself. 331dot (talk) 15:39, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Getting my business its own wiki page[edit]

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hearnedorothy (talk • contribs) 16:57, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hearnedorothy First, you must review the conflict of interest policy, as well as paid editing for information on formal disclosures you may be required to make. Wikipedia is not a place for businesses to tell the world about themselves and/or aid search results for them. This is an encyclopedia that has articles, not mere "pages". Those articles must summarize what independent reliable sources] with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about(in this case) a business, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable business. "Significant coverage" does not include press releases, the company website, staff interviews, announcement of routine business transactions like the raising of capital or opening of locations, or other primary sources.
- Your use of the term "startup" strongly suggests that your business does not yet meet the notability criteria; new businesses rarely do. A business must generally already be established to merit a Wikipedia article. An article might sound great for your business, but it is actually not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. 331dot (talk) 17:04, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
Correcting the title of an article[edit]
Is it possible for me to correct the title of this article? Llanstephan is misspelt. (The 'edit source' option does not appear to enable this.)
Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 18:43, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Horatius At The Bridge:The pagename is changed by 'moving' the page. This is enabled via the 'more' tab at the top of the page. As your account is WP:AUTOCONFIRMED this should be available to you. Note that articles use whatever is the commonname; please check whether this has been discussed before and if not, propose the change at the article talk page to find consensus. See WP:MOVE for more information. Please note that changing the file name in the markup means that the image will not display as it it will then link to a file that does not exist. The image file would have to be moved also. Eagleash (talk) 19:01, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

First ever edit ditched by someone called Serols[edit]
....because it was unhelpful
Why would folk not want to know the meaning in English of a Gaelic Hill name
Perhaps you could ask Serols to elaborate?
Thanks
Gav — Preceding unsigned comment added by GavfaeDundee (talk • contribs) 18:52, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @GavfaeDundee: I suspect this was reverted as Serols considered it misplaced at the top of the infobox. The name there would typically match the article title. If the translation was placed in the lead after the boldname say, in brackets, 'English, XXXXX', I think that would probably be acceptable. The editor concerned is one of Wikipedia's experienced and prolific disruption fighters and will often use automated tools fo find problems. This *can* lead to mis-identification and the tools are not really for use when it comes to good faith edits. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this:
~~~~.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 19:14, 7 October 2020 (UTC)- Yes your edit was OK, but asking User:Serols to elaborate is going to be up to you.
- It was OK, but it wasn't faultless, because you didn't provide a reference, and also because it would probably better to put it in the body of the text like this: "Aonach Shasuinn (English: Hill of the Saxon; 888 m) is..."
- According the key rule WP:BRD, the usual sequence is supposed to be:
- 1) You make your edit, as you did, and as is right and proper.
- 2) Another editor (User:Serols in this case) reverts it, as is their right.
- 3) You accept the reversion for the time being and open up a thread on the article's talk page giving your reasons for your edit and asking for discussion.
- 4) If and when there's general agreement that your original edit was OK, you put it back; if not, then not.
- User:Serols ought to have given an edit summary explaining why he reverted your edit, but he didn't, and it's not strictly required. Your next step is then is the article talk page.
- If no one else engages, which could happen as its a rather obscure article -- if neither User:Serols nor anyone else provides a reason that your edit shouldn't stand -- then after a reasonable time (10 days maybe?) well then User:Serols has had her chance, and you're justified in re-adding your edit. You should note in the talk page thread "no objection having been offered, I'm restoring the edit" or something.
- Keep in mind that if you should provide a reference, and if you don't the material will probably be tagged for deletion and eventually deleted anyway, though.
- So, it's off to the article talk page for you next. Herostratus (talk) 19:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Herostratus, thank you for your explanation. GavfaeDundee got information from me, that's why he asked here. Thanks --Serols (talk) 11:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- talk, another possibility would have been to contact me on my talk page, I would have explained everything to you - unsourced and wrong place. Please excuse that I scared you so, I deleted the warning. Regards --Serols (talk) 11:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
How to add a company to the list?[edit]
How does one add Richards Building Supply onto this list?
Richards Building Supply has been around since 1978 and has over 60 locations and growing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:249:F00:1511:9C01:21A0:9104:3A86 (talk) 20:50, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- That is a category, which groups together like articles, not a list. If the company meets the Wikipedia definition of a notable company, and receives significant coverage in independent reliable sources, it would merit an article that summarizes those sources. Be advised that successfully creating a new article is the absolute hardest task to perform on Wikipedia- but if you wish to try, please read Your first article and go to Articles for creation. 331dot (talk) 20:54, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
copyright issue from copy pasting[edit]
The article [3] was about Dwight Morrow. It was copy pasted to Academies at Englewood and copy pasted back to create Dwight Morrow. This has to be fixed which Wikipedia administrators say to do [4] or else there will be copyright issues. [edit]
I know that pages like Wikipedia:New user landing page have a hidden title because of the template {{hidden title}}. I also know that the Main Page has a hidden title, but automatically hidden titles? I don't know if this is a bug or if we need to write a phab ticket, but the word "Main Page" (specifically with a capital M and a capital P) followed by any number of everyday symbols or punctuation will hide the title. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page%24 for an example of the title "Main Page$". Also, the title "Main Page." (followed by a period) at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page.&redirect=no also has a hidden title. It seems like the title is automatically hidden for whatever unknown reason. Is this a problem with MediaWiki, or is it just a bug or something? Gioguch (talk) 23:21, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Gioguch: I investigated, it seems to be a problem of MediaWiki and the way how the title is hidden. Explanation: Whenever you load a page, mediaWiki will attach a CSS class to the <body>-Element that takes the form "page-normalised Page Name". Because Special Characters are not allowed in CSS classes, MediaWiki Will remove them and replace spaces with underscores. Therefore, both the class for Main Page and Main Page. will end up page-Main_Page the logic which hides the title is contained within MediaWiki:Common.css and is basically the following: Whenever you see a Element with the class ".page-MainPage", hide child elements with the id #firstHeading (which is the page title). Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:05, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Victor Schmidt mobil: Ok, but when you go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page%24&mobileaction=toggle_view_mobile, which is the mobile view version for "Main Page$", it doesn't hide the title nor show "Welcome, (your username)!" It actually shows the title. But how come the CSS class you were talking about only works for desktop view, not for mobile view? Or is it another bug? Gioguch (talk) 15:26, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Gioguch:} all the CSS classes and HTML ids are automatically added by MediaWiki (The software behind Wikipedia) when rendering the page for you. That the page title is shown on Mobile is simply caused because the mobile title element doesnt have the id #firstHeading, so the CSS rule that hides them on desktop simply doesnt apply there. - I know of no program called "Wikipedia Gifting". You are probably the victim of a scam. Since it is a very bad idea to share your contact details on an open forum like this one, you may choose to pursue this with e-mail with the Wikimedia Foundation (the organization that runs the Wikipedia system), but I fear that they will not have any information about the scammers. Try an e-mail to info@wikimedia.org to ask who to contact, but do not provide any financial info such as credit card or bank account numbers until you are sure you are in contact with the correct people. -Arch dude (talk) 08:05, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- (ec)I'm not sure what you are referencing by a "Wikipedia gift". Did you perhaps accidentally authorize a recurring donation to the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that operates Wikipedia? If you have never donated to the Foundation, you will need to contact your financial institution and possibly your local authorities for assistance. 331dot (talk) 08:06, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Title of actor credited under different names[edit]
Scenario: Actor has been going by a certain name for a while, most of the links to the page are under that name, has a Google knowledge panel, etc. Recently/currently, they have started going by a stage name. Would it be right to have the page be titled the current/recent name they go by, or the name they have mostly been credited as up until now?
Page in question: Odessa A'zion (stage name) / Odessa Adlon (real name)
- @Starklinson: Generally we go by WP:COMMONNAME, so if she had just recently switched, most of the reliable sources would still refer to her by her birthname which we would leave as the title (her stage name can be added to the body of the article, though). It could change as sources gradually use her stage name more. (Please remember to sign your messages with four tildes, like this:
first things to do in wikipedia when uploading[edit]
wanted to ask what would be the first things to do or process to go to when uploading a file in wikipedia? Yogibur (talk) 10:05, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Yogibur: Generally, the first thing you should do is find out who owns the copyright (if it isn't you) and either way, under which license you will license it (for your own files, not files downloaded from the internet) or under which license they are (for files where you are not the copyright holder). I also recommend that new users use the file upload wizard at least until you get how things work. Victor Schmidt (talk) 11:26, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
incorrect page that needs to be changed[edit]
Hi,
There's a page in wikipedia that is not correct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3CS_(research)
I've tried to add the correct information but it was removed. It is not promotional. Both the title (3CS research) and content is wrong. The research is called Crop Science Centre. Is it possible to remove the current page? thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by CambPlants (talk • contribs) 10:59, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- CambPlants, Content like
The centre will provide leadership in crop science, generating a dynamic research community whilst training a new generation of researchers in crop science
orThe Centre is designed to fast-track technologies to sustainably improve farmers’ yields worldwide
is definitely promotional and not adhering to the neutral tone expected on Wikipedia. Your username also implies shared use since it represents the centre as a whole, which is not allowed under our username policy. Finally, it seems that you might be being paid for your contributions or have a different conflict of interest; in both cases, you need to disclose your affiliation with the subject. In case you are expected to edit the page as part of your job, you are required to do so by our terms of use. If you do have a conflict of interest of any kind, you should not be editing the page directly, but instead propose changes on the article's talk page, backed up by reliable sources. - @Geniusgracious: first, make sure your organization is notable by our definition (see WP:NCORP) by finding a few really good references. This is easy to mess up: see WP:CSMN. Then, add those references to your draft, and add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the draft. this will provide a "submit" button. Read through WP:YFA before you hit that button, or you are likely to have your submission declined. BUT before you do any of that, read and comply with WP:PAID. -Arch dude (talk) 15:49, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Misinformation involving Marvel Cenamatic Universe[edit]
I was reviewing some information involving the First Marvel Movie.
Your wikipedia post says iron man (2008) was the first marvel movie but there is no mention of Blade Trinity (2004). To the best of my knowledge, Blade Trinity was the first Marvel movie.
While it is not officially part of the MCU phases, it should still be listed in the encyclopedia
My Wiki[edit]
- Well, ... @Johndavidmusic: I am not an admin, so I cant read deleted pages, but I get the sllight feeling that I need to Inform you about a few things. First, please be aware that the Term "Wiki" refers to certain open-editable Websites, including, but not limited to, The english Wikipedia, which is a particular Wiki. Second, please be aware that nobody "owns" a Wikipedia article. Third, since you attempted to write about yourself, please be aware that autobiographys are strongely discouraged and that there may be good reasons why one would rather not have a Wikipedia article. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:01, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
I take it that of the two living John Davids on Wikipedia the one you are trying to distinguish yourself from is the one referred to as "John David (musician)" who is from Wales. If there is something in that article that suggests he is you or vice versa (such as you wrote "Red Sky" ,) you should raise the confusion on the talk page to that article setting out the problem. If there is nothing in that article that causes any confusion (for instance if you are a classical violinist from Belfast concentrating on JS Bach) I do not think this is a Wikipedia problem.Spinney Hill (talk) 08:45, 9 October 2020 (UTC).
- Orangemike has blocked Johndavidmusic for advertising himself and anyway having a promotional username. Whatever the editor's actual name and profession, "Johndavidmusic" seems innocuous to me (it's not a band or company name; it's not clear that he intends to edit an article about a John David other than himself, etc etc). Creating the draft of an article about oneself in one's own sandbox is usually not a good idea (and often a really bad one), but I don't think it merits a block, particularly if, as here, the draft had a lifespan of just sixty minutes and no promotional phrasing. Johndavidmusic seems to have a mistaken idea of what Wikipedia is, but it's one that's widespread and I see no reason not to assume good faith. I'd urge Orangemike to unblock him. (Normally I'd say this on Orangemike's talk page, but perhaps it's better to keep this together.) -- Hoary (talk) 09:49, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
