Most Mysterious song on the internet[edit]

I made an update to the Wikipedia article about the most mysterious song on the internet which was then removed by somebody. Please contact me so I can discuss the changes I made or give me the contact information of who controls the removal of information and who first posted it. I was the singer of the song and wrote the lyrics in an ad lid contest in the early 1980s. If you need some type of proof of this let me know what I need to furnish to you to prove this? There was no copyright filed on it and I had no idea they had recorded me when it was sang in the contest but will furnish you whatever it will take to prove this.

Thank you.

The place to discuss this is on the article's talk page. Information must come from reliable published sources, not your personal knowledge. RudolfRed (talk) 01:41, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'm sorry, but that is not how Wikipedia works. We are crowdsourced, with more than 10 million editors over the last 20 years and more than 100,000 in the last 30 days. All content is added by these anonymous editors. We have no means, and no desire, to validate the identity of any editor. All content therefore must be cited to published reliable sources: see WP:RS. -Arch dude (talk) 01:51, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Also, see WP:NPOV and WP:PUFFERY regarding statements like "Most Mysterious song on the internet", which, even if you could find a source that said it, would be unencyclopedic and inappropriate for a Wikipedia article. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 08:12, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Courtesy link: The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet. I do not see where you made a change or where one was reverted recently. How to cite with "et al" in the Visual Editor[edit]

Now that "display-authors" is deprecated is there a way to do this in Visual Editor please? I have been advised to limit to 6 authors.

Chidgk1 (talk) 08:24, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

|displayauthors= is deprecated; |display-authors= (with the hyphen) is not deprecated:
{{cite journal |title=Title |journal=Journal |author=Black |author2=Brown |author3=Red |author4=Orange |display-authors=2}}Black; Brown; et al. "Title". Journal.
While |displayauthors= is deprecated, it is still functional. There are several editors currently running awb scripts that are cleaning up newly deprecated cs1|2 parameters. You might want to edit the TemplateData for whichever cs1|2 template you are using to remove |displayauthors= or find someone who will (I will not be that someone).
Trappist the monk (talk) 11:39, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Yes on the visual editor it is called "Display authors" (should I put a screenshot here and if so how - by the way imgur is blocked in this country) and when I click the "i" in a circle it says "Number of authors to display before 'et al.' is used. By default, all authors are displayed. Examples: |display-authors=2 will display only the first two authors in a citation followed by et al. |display-authors=etal displays all authors in the list followed by et al." but when I actually try and use it it tries to use the deprecated one without the hyphen and gives a message "Cite uses deprecated parameter |displayauthors". I just used the "automatic" cite function in Visual Editor on to https://doi.org/10.5194%2Fessd-11-1783-2019 and I think that decided it was a journal. So is the problem in the automatic function rather than the "cite journal" template? (by the way unless there is some way I can just "watch" this question please could you ping me). Chidgk1 (talk) 06:44, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
Chidgk1, why not just switch to the source editor once you've done everything on visual? I find templates to be way easier to work with in source. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:20, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
Tenryuu That is fine for me now as an old techie, but unfortunately Greenhouse gas emissions by Turkey are likely to continue for decades and if I manage to get it to FA the article will need maintaining to stay there, and I suspect in future editors new to Wikipedia will not bother to learn source editing. Does anyone know where the code for the automatic cite function lives? Chidgk1 (talk) 05:59, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

"Table within a table" coding[edit]

Dear experts,

I have configured a table within a table on my User:SCHolar44/subpage6 page. As show in the table, I need to move the Column 2 heading up to the top of the column, and to have a [Show] button to disclose text currently in the form of Lorem ipsum "greeking". The current "Summary" heading and adjacent button would go. I would greatly appreciate advice on how to do this.

In the Edit view, I have also included a note asking what the purpose of a "width="40%" line is.

Vivo Energy Page[edit]

Hi, I work for a digital agency that manages the website of Vivo Energy and they have requested that I help them with changing information that is wrong or out of date on the page for the company https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivo_Energy .

I have left comments on the talk page to try and get some things changed however the editor that has been helping me feels that they can't take too many suggestions from me due to my conflict of interest on this, however some of the information on the page is still incorrect. I appreciate that this editor is just trying to stick to guidelines and the spirit of the guidelines, so I don't want to spend time trying to persuade them to make the edit - is there a way that I can get the attention of other editors on this page so that they can review the requested changes for me?

Thanks --TomTCantarus (talk) 11:53, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

TomTCantarus, if you have a client relationship with Vivo you must declare this; generally it is done on your user page. The template {{paid}} can be used to do so. If you would like interested editors to see your requests, use the edit request system. I also recommend rereading WP:RS, as sources used here must be reliable and independent. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:36, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Question about cryptic wikilinks[edit]

If you go the article on the River Wye and looks on the talk page, one will see a sub-section entitled "ENGLISH-WALES BORDER". There some one says "Some people would say Monmouthshire is in England". User: Ghmyrtle has typed a reply saying "Some people are wrong, that is why we write educational articles such as "this". The word "this" is in blue letters, suggesting it is a wikilink, and indeed if you click on it one does get to an article on Monmouthshire. My question is, how does one get to do what User: Ghmyrtle has done and type a simple word such as "this" and make it a wikilink to a Wikipedia article? Many thanks for any help, Vorbee (talk) 15:03, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

@Vorbee: This is called piping. Ghmyrtle typed [[Monmouthshire (historic)#Ambiguity over Welsh status|this]] to produce this, and I typed [[WP:PIPE|piping]] to produce piping. I hope that makes sense! DuncanHill (talk) 15:07, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Dear User: DuncanHill, thank you for your very prompt response. I have tried piping on the sandbox on my userpage - seeing whether this would take me to the article on Martin Luther. It did. In all of the many years I have been using Wikipedia, I am sure I have seen piping getting people to specific sections of articles. How do I do this, please? Vorbee (talk) 18:14, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Do the same thing, but add a hashmark/pound sign and the title of the specific section, with spaces not underlines. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:26, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Minor infraction[edit]

WP:BLANKING says "A number of important matters may not be removed by the user—they are part of the wider community's processes: [including] The "Old Warnings" {{ow}} template." (Template:OW).

So what do you do if the users deletes the template? This really seems like it is too minor to take to ANI, but on the other hand if we have a "don't remove this" rule that isn't enforced, why bother having it? Is the answer proposing that we remove the rule? To go to ANI anyway and no doubt to get shot down for complaining about such a minor infraction? Perhaps we should write up a standard warning template for this. --Guy Macon (talk) 16:51, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

@Guy Macon: I'm unfamiliar with that template, but after a quick read, my solution would be to restore it, warn the user and then go to ANI if it's removed again. Perhaps an admin with experience dealing with this situation can chime in. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:19, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
It was added a month ago, I personally think it should be removed. This template is only really used for IP editors, and I don't see a reason why IP editors shouldn't be allowed to clear their talk page even if it once contained warnings. – Thjarkur (talk) 22:18, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
I can see no discussion of adding old warnings template to the list of things that cannot be removed, so have reverted it. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:37, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

I don't know. For me they appear both in the new vector version and timeless. Is there any particular page you think about and which skin are you using? Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 07:49, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
(ec) Deb They were there on this Help desk on my browser just before I clicked edit. They don't appear while I am in editing mode. —teb728 t c 07:48, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
They never appear in edit mode, but now they aren't there at all - yet they are there in all other Wikipedias. Surely my profile should be the same in French wikipedia as it is in English wikipedia? I've changed nothing and I'm using Modern, but I can see that they are still there in the Timeless skin so I guess there must have been a change to that. Deb (talk) 12:47, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
I momentarily switched over to that skin to test it out and I can confirm that the interwiki links don't appear in the sidebar. It sounds like a WP:VPT or Phabricator issue. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:41, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Create a page[edit]

How can we create a profile page for organization? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SteveDhoni (talkcontribs) 08:01, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

I'll assume that this is related to your creation, Draft:Selva (which may have been deleted by the time that you read this). We cannot. We do not write about our organizations. We use independent, reliable, published sources to write about organizations of which we are not members. And if the results still somehow resemble PR releases, they must either be radically rewritten or be deleted. -- Hoary (talk) 08:08, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Anyway, I could use all the help to make more pages. I want to contribute to wiki. workerbide —Preceding undated comment added 19:35, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Workerbide, and thank you for wanting to contribute to Wikipedia. I understand the wish to create new articles - I remember feeling that myself, when I was a new editor. But we have more than six million articles, and thousands and thousands of them - maybe millions - are in desperately bad shape. I believe that if a new editor spent a few months improving existing articles rather than trying to create a new one straight away, in most cases they would be adding hundreds of times more value to Wikipedia than their attempt at a new article does. --ColinFine (talk) 19:54, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Article Vote Alert - Question[edit]

So for merges/splits/deletion there are templates which create an alert for other editors to discuss. If a vote (Over topic in the article, not about the entire article) is taking place, is there a template to use to alert editors to that vote? Thanks for help in advance. Elijahandskip (talk) 16:26, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

@Elijahandskip: You can always add a page and its talk page to your watch list. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:10, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
It isn't for me. So for example, on Biden–Ukraine conspiracy theory, there is a debate (edit wars) in the lead statement and other parts of the article. Currently a name change vote is taken place (Has a notice on the article about the vote) and there is a vote for the lead statement (Doesn't have a notice at the top of he article.) My question is about creating a notice for a vote like the lead statement type vote.Elijahandskip (talk) 18:19, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
The feedback request service notifies people who have subscribed, thus bringing in unconnected editors. And anyone with the talk page on their watch list can participate as well. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:21, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello, IP user. The comment that another IP user put in the article in August did not belong there, and indeed was a piece of vandalism. Unfortunately, your reply was also inappropriate to a Wikipedia article. I think that Materialscientist must have noticed that you had introduced inappropriate material and removed it, without noticing that the previous edit had also been inappropriate. (My guess is that Materialscientist was using a semi-automated tool: the battle against vandalism in Wikipedia is arduous, and people can't spend a lot of time on each case checking the rights and wrongs). Elijanandskip has now removed the offending sentence as well as your reply. I
I hope you understand how your edit, though well-meant, was also not acceptable in Wikipedia: Wikipedia takes a neutral stance: an article should never either praise or condemn anybody (unless it is quoting a reliable published source that praises or condemns). --ColinFine (talk) 20:23, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

You're right, I never hit "Publish" because I wasn't finished because of what I just described above! I had no idea what happened to change the text. Cohosh, just remember that in this context "publish" doesn't mean "announce to Google, Bing, Duckduckgo and thereby to the world"; it just means "save so that you and others can look at it". And learning from mistakes, even ghastly ones, is what sandboxes are for. Incidentally, when you write a comment here or on another talk page, please end it with four consecutive tildes ("~"): this will add your username and the time. -- Hoary (talk) 01:06, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

how to express date when the source only gives a (northern hemisphere) season[edit]

MOS:SEASON says to avoid using terms like "spring of 2021", but what does one do when the source gives no other information, and the source is probably Russian so it is not clear (at least not to me) what they mean by "Spring"? The Candidates Tournament 2020 in chess has been postponed until "the spring of 2021".[1] What is the most appropriate way to express that? I could say "northern spring 2021", but that sounds like a bottled water; or "northern hemisphere spring 2021", which seems a bit clumsy. I could say "March to May 2021", but I am unsure whether all countries define "spring" that way. Or leave it and let the context be obvious, though as an Australian that frustrates me. Adpete (talk) 02:07, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Maybe "First half of 2021"? --Floquenbeam (talk) 02:09, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Maybe. On further thought: I think it is appropriate to be precise ("northern hemisphere spring") in the body of the article; and the dilemma is more how to put it in the lead. Adpete (talk) 02:25, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Adpete, while unconventional, you could directly quote from the article, and where the source is located should hopefully allow readers to infer which hemisphere (and subsequently season) the event is taking place in. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:29, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
@Adpete and Tenryuu: Yes, just put quotes around "spring of 2021" and let it go at that. The guidance for not using "spring" is part of our goal of avoiding "hemispheric bias" (see WP:BIAS), but we cannot WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS if it gets in the way of writing a readable encyclopedia. -Arch dude (talk) 03:24, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
@Adpete: I don't think the northern hemisphere part is necessary, since that is implied by the location of the tournament (much like dates and times are assumed to be local to the subject unless otherwise specified). Journal cites routinely use issue dates like "Spring 2021" (no "of"). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 03:38, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Actually the location for the resumption has not been announced. So it is possible, though very unlikely, that it might be held in the tropics or southern hemisphere. (And there is precedent: part of a 1993 championship between a Dutchman and a Russian was played in Jakarta). Adpete (talk) 05:21, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Since the location isn't known yet, I'd be more inclined to stick with using direct quotes. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:45, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
I see. Makes sense to me. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 19:34, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Julia Holcomb was a 16 year old child. She was not a groupie. She was a victim of statutory rape by a then 27 year old Steven Tyler. You need to correct the page on Steven Tyler. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.240.221.170 (talk) 05:35, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

do you have a reliable source for that? Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:35, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
I don't know if there's a source that calls it statutory rape specifically but the current source for "groupie" doesn't seem to exist in this context and I have a hard time believing writing "16 year old groupie" when talking about the relationship between a nearly 30 year old man and a teenager is NPOV. Praxidicae (talk) 15:58, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
I've boldly removed it. It adds nothing to the article and still adequately explains what needs explaining. Praxidicae (talk) 16:01, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Which article are you talking about? There are no photos in the Henry Cecil McBay article. Adpete (talk) 08:06, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Perhaps you mean the "google panel". Those are out of WP:s control (but they have a "feedback" link), though they often take info from here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:36, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
The Google knowledge panel does have an image, but hirsute in it, he is not. Eagleash (talk) 12:37, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Here there is an image with that name and facial hair but may or may not, look like him as far as I can see. Eagleash (talk) 12:43, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Google has a tendency to use our picture when it exists. When our article has no picture, google apparently does an Internet search and quite often gets the wrong picture: we have no control over Google in this regard. However, if you can find a properly-licensed picture of Dr. McBay and upload it here, then we can put it in our article, and Google is likely to eventually begin using it. -Arch dude (talk) 18:07, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

LTA?[edit]

diff

Hey all, a recent edit I made got flagged as “Potential LTA”. I believe that’s an abbreviation for Long Term Abuse (if not please correct me). Wonder what triggered the flag and what I can do about it. You may find the edit here Thank you. 123.231.110.126 (talk) 10:40, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

You can find more detail in the edit filter log. Ruslik_Zero 12:52, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: That first log entry doesn't show any detail to editors who lack your advanced permissions. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:49, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
This is what's known as a false positive. We try to keep these to a minimum, but it sometimes happens. Most people who look at such things would know to ignore it. It's going to be a rare event which you might not be able to repeat even if you tried, but I'll see what can be done about it anyway to reduce future occurrences. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:29, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
@zzuuzz, @123.231.110.126, I presume the reasons for the filter picking up the edit include that it was to a controversial article and by a new account. It seems reasonable to flag that kind of edit for checking, if not to label it as “Potential LTA”. TSventon (talk) 19:48, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Basically it was due to an overly broad filter, which I've since changed. It's simply not helpful to liberally add LTA tags, as this thread probably demonstrates. Personally, I don't see any reason to add any tag, and operationally, it's fairly impractical. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:07, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

But perhaps you could find help and support info at one of the official sites listed at the bottom of Wikipedia's BritBox article. —teb728 t c 22:08, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

correction[edit]

at the site - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Los_Angeles_Historic-Cultural_Monuments_in_Downtown_Los_Angeles in item #449 there is a misspelling - it should be Domingo Mora

sincerely, Peter hiller Jo Mora Trust Collection Curator — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:2B30:C000:658B:3BE6:936B:DF0 (talk) 21:39, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing that: I have corrected the name, and also copied (from another article) a citation to a source for it. Normally I would say "you could have corrected it yourself", but you might be seen to have a conflict of interest in editing things about Domingo Mora, so should be circumspect. If you need to do so in future, you could put an edit request on the talk page of the particular article. --ColinFine (talk) 22:04, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Are There Templates for Different Kinds of Articles?[edit]

It's been a few years since I last edited anything on Wikipedia, but I'd like to add an article about a nonprofit organization that does not yet have an article. Is there a more or less standard template for creating an article about an organization?

Thanks. Brucehartford (talk) 22:16, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Adding Name as a Cast Member[edit]

I have added my name as a cast member in a Lifetime Movie and a user keeps removing my name. How can I get my name to be displayed without someone removing it?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:484:C000:BC40:39A0:C9EC:D25B:EA64 (talk) 02:27, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

By finding and citing an independent, reliable source that mentions you as a cast member. HiLo48 (talk) 02:30, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
