COPE provides leadership in thinking on publication ethics and practical resources to educate and support members, and offers a professional voice in current debates.
Our core practices
Core practices are the policies and practices journals and publishers need, to reach the highest standards in publication ethics. We include cases with advice, guidance for day-to-day practice, education modules and events on topical issues, to support journals and publishers fulfil their policies.
Guidance & discussion
COPE's authorship and contributorship flowcharts include guidance on: changes in authorship; ghost, guest or gift authorship; how to recognise potential authorship problems. The flowcharts offer a step by step process for practical use by editors.
A case was brought to COPE in 2007, but overly high productivity suggestive of systematic gift authorship is still very relevant in 2021. This case discussion adds to the Forum advice, with further analysis and guidance.
New cases brought to the March Forum for discussion by members include: preprint plagiarism; author anonymity at the final proofreading stages; author alleges discrimination by institutional report.
We bring together support and guidance on issues that have come about during this crisis. Including articles on how authors, editors and reviewers are handling their work during this period, and guidelines developed.
A Short Guide to Ethical Editing for New Editors. Becoming an editor of a journal is an exciting but daunting task. This short guide aims to summarise key issues and to provide links to useful resources.
