Wikilink preview[edit]

When I hover over a wikilink I am no longer able to see a preview when I'm logged in. I am able to see a preview if I'm not logged in. Bob K31416 (talk) 00:36, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@Bob K31416: The preview feature for unregistered users is "Enable page previews" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. Registered users can also choose another preview feature "Navigation popups" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:44, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Regarding unregistered users, is the default: enable page previews? Also, when I clicked on the link in your first sentence when not logged in, it asked me to log in. I thought the link in the first sentence was for unregistered users but apparently it isn't. Bob K31416 (talk) 01:36, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Usually I just upload the photos to the listing and they show up. SharonPapierdreams (talk) 00:09, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@SharonPapierdreams: They don't show up automatically. You have to edit the page and add the file name to the image parameter. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:30, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Thanks. I've never had to do that to the hundreds of photos that I have added to historic register listings. I usually just upload the images and they show up automatically. How do I go about editing a page and adding files? SharonPapierdreams (talk) 10:57, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@SharonPapierdreams: In the source editor, write the file name after |image= like the entries which do have images. If you don't know how to switch between VisualEditor and source editor then see Help:VisualEditor#Opening VisualEditor. The edit is harder to make with VisualEditor where it's difficult to locate the right image field. Can you give an example of an image which showed up automatically? PrimeHunter (talk) 13:30, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@SharonPapierdreams: Click the "View history" tab to see the page history [1]. Those three images were manually added to the article by another user Farragutful. Hi Dost17! If you delete your cookies, your browser doesn't have the ability to remain logged in to any website (depending on what is deleted). There are many reasons to delete your browsing history (although, if you are trying to remove specific websites, maybe it is worth opening them in some sort of incognito mode regardless), but there is usually a button to press to remove deleting cookies, which is what would help with this. If not, just log in again! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:46, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Symbol move vote.svg Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. Anarchism articles by quality and importance - articles stuck in "NA"[edit]

Hi, I have been working on assessing articles and have noticed that, even though articles have an "importance=" assigned to them, they are stuck in the "NA" category. @Jamzze that's a third party site, so not sure how to invalidate the cache, but see Wikipedia:Purge for resetting caches on Wikipedia infrastructure. badly indexed entry?[edit]

Searching for "Chastye islands" says "The page Chastye islands does not exit.". But the first sugeested entry is "Chastye Islands". What's up with that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScotKelly (talkcontribs) 13:33, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

ScotKelly, this is normal, as page names are case sensitive (apart from the first letter) so Chastye islands does not exist, but Chastye Islands does. TSventon (talk) 13:41, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@ScotKelly: Where are you making the search? The search box at top of every page should go directly to a page which only differs by capitalization. It works for me. The big search box at Special:Search works differently. It never goes directly to a page, and it says if the searched capitalization does not exist. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:51, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

WipeOS data erasure[edit]

Hello,

my company is a leader in the data erasure software industry. We have been around for over 5 years and have over 100 clients worldwide. I would like to know how I may get our solution listed here;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data-erasing_software

Any input is appreciated and I look forward to adding valuable details here n Wikipedia.

Josh Heath - www.wipeos.com - (Redacted) Lvit2levi (talk) 13:57, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

The criterion for adding entries to such lists is that they have standalone Wikipedia articles. (Some exceptions apply but none is really relevant here.)
The criterion to have a standalone article is given at WP:NPRODUCT. Based on a quick online search and what you say, I am almost certain that there is nowhere enough significant coverage to demonstrate notability (the number of clients is irrelevant to the evaluation, but most companies that do have pages have more than "over 100 clients worldwide").
Finally, Lvit2levi, I redacted your phone number, which you should not put on Wikipedia for multiple reasons (it is dangerous privacy-wise, and useless to making Wikipedia edits); and you should read and comply with our paid contributor terms of use. Help titling my draft in sandbox[edit]

Hello,

I am not an autoconfirmed user as yet but I have made ten good faith edits to a wikipedia article, and 27 to the draft in my sandbox. I am unsure of how to title my draft. That is, I am unsure as to how I may make it so that, upon publishing, my article says "Dara" in the title and not "User:Manu9305/sandbox".

Please advise.

Best, Manu.

Manu9305 (talk) 15:46, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@Manu9305: Hi there! If your draft is accepted, the accepting editor will change the title for you. Since there is already an article called Dara about the given name, the accepting editor would pick a name unique to Wikipedia, and then add a link from Dara (disambiguation) to the new article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:09, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

How to or should I note legislative redistricting in an Infobox[edit]

Hi, I'm currently editing an article about a historical politician in my state, more specifically, I am adding an infobox to the article along with more information. While I know his district thanks to state records, by the end of his term the state underwent a major change to it's legislative districts which I've failed to find any record of beyond it's existence. The change is such that the naming convention of districts itself changed, and I cannot find a record either of the legislative districts before or after this change.

Because of this, while I can know this politician's predecessor, I cannot know their successor. I'm not entirely sure how to present this information, if at all. Is it acceptable to leave the successor entry blank if I cannot or do not know? Should I somehow make note of this redistricting, with a citation demonstrating that it occurred?

Similarly, how are situations of redistricting handled even if the successor may be known?

Thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Calphff (talkcontribs) 16:26, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@Calphff: Hi there! If you cannot find a reliable source, then leave the infobox parameter blank. You can also ask for assistance on the article's talk page. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:47, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Infoboxes are pretty blunt instruments for something subtle like a major redistricting. It's better to describe the succession issue in the article's text. "The old 3rd Gaines County district was eliminated in the 1853 legislative redistricting. Axolotl, Potrzebie, Melvin and Alfred townships went into the new 42nd District; the Villages of Cowznofski and Spa Fon, and Wallywood and Willelder townships, became part of the 47th District; and the Cities of Whatmeworrry and Neumann, encompassing 73% of the old district, became the new 23rd District. Joe Btfsplk was elected in the 1854 election to represent that district." --Orange Mike | Talk 13:05, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@WilliamsPowersWiki: Each article on Wikipedia must be about a subject that is notable by our definition: see WP:N and specifically WP:NAUTHOR. Please do not put any effort into writing an article unless you are sure the subject will meet our criteria. Writing a published book is not generally sufficient: more than 6000 new titles are published every day. Once you are sure the author is notable, then proceed to WP:YFA. Sebastian Mikosz[edit]

Hi,

I am attempting to write a Wiki entry for Sebastian Mikosz. He is an SVP for aviation environment at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). I was employed in the comms team at IATA until recently and was asked to do a Wiki entry for Sebastian. My first attempt was knocked back on the grounds that I had included an IATA press release as a source. I have changed that and added sources which include the Financial Times, Reuters, Association Press and others. I re-submitted the entry but I can't find in and I'm not sure whether it has been approved this time around. Also, I'm happy to disclose my interests that I worked at IATA so therefore am a paid contributer, but I'm not sure where to post that. Can you help? @David mystery books research: Can you please rephrase your question? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:36, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@David mystery books research - if you are talking about when someone edits wikipedia without logging in, all edits are tracked back to their IP address. Often for institutions like schools, the IP address is static (doesn't change) but is also shared by multiple individuals. They are also often a source of spam or test edits. As a result sometimes editing from these IP addresses are WP:BLOCKED from editing. Unfortunately since the IP address is shared by multiple people, the block affects many people unilaterally. If you edit wikipedia while not logged into your account you may inadvertently leak personal information about yourself, that you'd rather keep private - this is best avoided by logging in to Wikipedia. Closing and RfC[edit]

I posted a Request for Comment at Talk:CRA International#RfC on lead of Charles River Associates on Oct. 14, 2021, asking whether a paragraph added to the lead was WP:Undue, WP: Impartial and followed WP:Balance. Eight editors have now weighed in and except for the editor who posted the paragraph, everyone agrees the current paragraph violates Wikipedia policy and needs to be removed or rewritten. I work as an employee of CRA, which I disclosed on the Talk page. Another editor has already pointed out that the RfC response of the editor who posted this paragraph feels like WP: Advocacy and WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS.

With such overwhelming consensus that this paragraph as constituted now is improper, it seems unjustified that it should remain in the lead for perhaps several weeks more while the RFC continues until final status. Even a few weeks of unmerited negative material (written in the voice of Wikipedia) encourages more WP: Advocacy and WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS.

Can someone here either remove the improper sentence or close and implement this RFC? Thank you. Basslonick1220 (talk) 18:29, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Hi Basslonick1220, I haven't reviewed any of the details of the situation. I just wanted to point you to WP:ANRFC, where you can post a request for closure. @Basslonick1220: You already asked about this at the Teahouse. Please don't post the same question in multiple places. RudolfRed (talk) 19:05, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Trying to create a new page[edit]

Hi there, I am trying to create a new Wikipedia page and am having issues doing so. Is there a guide to how to make this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmackin12 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@Lmackin12: Check out WP:YFA. It has the steps to follow, and also a Wizard to help create a draft article for review. Its not a very easy task for new editors. The usual advice is to spend time working on improving existing articles first, to get experience with Wikipedia. RudolfRed (talk) 19:32, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Lmackin12: Wikipedia has articles, not mere "pages". Your draft was deleted as a copyright violation; you cannot simply copy other content to Wikipedia. A Wikipedia article about a person must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about a person, showing how they meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person. Please see Your First Article.
If you have an association with the person you are writing about, please review conflict of interest and paid editing. 331dot (talk) 19:36, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Lmackin12: there is only one absolute requirement for a new Wikipedia article: the subject must be notable by our definition. Please read WP:N. If the subject is not notable, then do not put any more effort into writing the article, as we will delete it. See WP:AMOUNT. We delete about 200 articles every day. If the subject is notable, then we can and will help you with the article. Start at WP:YFA. -Arch dude (talk) 21:15, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

history of deleted page[edit]

A while ago my sandbox was deleted by an administrator supposedly because I copy and pasted the Donald Trump article into there. I only did it to test dummy citations. When I said that was a bad reason to delete my sandbox he responeded "well now you know." I still think his deletion of my sandbox and the history of it to be unneccesary. I was wondering how I could get the sandbox history back if possible ? --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 21:09, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@The Tips of Apmh: I'm a bit confused. Were you editing your personal sandbox or the Wikipedia sandbox? I glanced at your edit history and it appears to be the latter. You'll be better off to you edit your own personal sandbox (click sandbox next to your name at the top menu) with highly viewed and controversial articles. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:19, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Timtempleton: It was my personal sandbox. --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 22:21, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@The Tips of Apmh: For future reference, you are allowed to copy to a new page, including your sandbox, from any article in Wikipedia, BUT YOU MUST ATTRIBUTE THE SOURCE article: see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. A big note on your sandbox copy's talk page will suffice here, explaining why you copied it. I suggest you politely cite this guideline and request the deleting admin to please restore your sandbox. Please do ensure you immediately eliminate all categories and all non-free images from your copy. Categories don't belong on sandbox pages for technical reasons and non-free images don't belong there for copyright reasons. -Arch dude (talk) 22:23, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Arch dude: I don't need that specific revision to be restored, i just want my full sandbox history back. I had things there I want back. --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 22:30, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@The Tips of Apmh: Isn't this it here? [2] TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:36, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Timtempleton: No, that only goes back to october 6, I edited it before then. The history was deleted when my sandbox was deleted. I'm confused why the admin didn't just blank the page instead of delete it. --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 22:40, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@The Tips of Apmh: If it was a blatant copyright violation, then it falls under Wikipedia:Revision deletion, which calls for extreme deletion measures. See the list of administrators who can help you get the info back. Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:53, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Timtempleton: OK, I might do that. thanks for the help. --The Tips of Apmh (talk) 23:43, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

What is the definition of WP:QUO ?[edit]

A user made an edit summary saying "when there is a dispute, we do not keep your more favoured version but return to the status quo ante, and this has been the most stable version (since I took a break)".

The version they're reverting to was from a year ago (they took a year long 'break'). Over that year there's been countless edits and significant discussion on the part of the page they're reverting (although, I can't find any discussion on the exact words being reverted).

What criteria (or over what time scale) does something become WP:QUO? --Twozerooz (talk) 21:58, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@Twozerooz: We'd need to see the context. Every situation is different. Please link, and (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~.) TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:11, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Symbol redirect vote2.svg Courtesy link: Social democracy This appears to be about edit warring and there have been blocks. TimTempleton (talk) (cont)
@Timtempleton: I assume that means that rather than any specific criteria, it's mostly just a vague concept that's designed to flexible and situation-specific? --Twozerooz (talk) 22:25, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Twozerooz: It's hard to explain without knowing the full context. And if everything could be decided by an algorithm, with little room for interpretation, we wouldn't need editors. A lot of this is judgement calls that come from years of experience. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:38, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Ok thanks --Twozerooz (talk) 22:52, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

"The time allocated for running scripts has expired" on the video game portal[edit]

I don't know where to report bugs so I reported it here.

On the bottom half of the video games portal, there are several lines of red text that say The time allocated for running scripts has expired. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause or if it bothers anyone.

Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood[edit]

In the "charity work section of this page - the word soirees - toward the end of the text - should have an accent on the first "e" letter. Also could you please link the word soirees directly to the sub-section titled "Soirees" on the Party link itself - I cannot do this. at all. Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 00:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Hi there! I have confidence that you can do this! Here's how:
  1. Go to Party#Soirées and copy the "é" character.
  2. Go to Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, click Edit, and paste the "é" character in the appropriate place.
  3. Now that you have the word "soirées" in the article, create a link to soirées. I changed that page so it will redirect to Party#Soirées for you.
Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:01, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I did it! Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 01:23, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Yes you did - congratulations! I see you created a piped link [[Party#Soirées|soirées]]. You could have also used the simpler [[soirées]] to achieve the same thing, since soirées now links to Party#Soirées. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Family of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge[edit]

Please check these very Red. references. and fix if able - numbers 39, 40, 42, 113 and 123. Thanks - it iOS not good to see red print is it? 115.70.23.77 (talk) 01:41, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Hi again! Bettydaisies recently removed some named references from the article in this edit, which caused these errors. I hope the two of you can discuss these edits on the article talk page and come to a consensus on what should be included in the article. Happy editing! I believe the orphaned refs (sorry about that!) have been fixed by AnomieBOT.--Bettydaisies (talk) 05:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

I can not introduce a new topic of discussion[edit]

I added a discussion topic to the Wikipedia entry "Gray code" but I do not see it -I have put my signature. Here is the title and text of the discussion I suggested:

Subject: Two new methods for converting integers to Gray code

I want to suggest two new methods for converting integers to Gray code.

The first method is very simple and has a trivial proof:

My method for converting an integer to Gray code (bin) uses successive divisions by powers of 2 and looks at the parity of the rounded quotient. eg:

29/2=14.5~15 1 29/4=7.3~7 1 29/8=3.6~4 0 29/16=1.8~2 0 29/32=0.9~1 1

The decimal value 29 has the binary value 10011 in Gray code.

The second method allows you to convert all numbers that have the same number of digits in the binary system to Gray code without any calculation. The interesting thing about this method is that the conversion is achieved through the Thue Morse sequence. As far as I know, no such close association of the Gray code with the Thue Morse sequence has been found so far. This method is described in the following link together with the proof of Max Alekseyev.

@George Plousos: This may run against the rule of no original research. See WP:OR. If you can find the information you want to add in a published reliable source, then you can discuss the addition on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 02:50, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

No. This is an encyclopedia, it's not a repository for pedagogic material. If you're concerned with tertiary education, you might take a look at Wikiversity. -- Hoary (talk) 07:22, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Muddy (film)[edit]

I create an Article for the first Indian off-road film which is well-sourced and completed and ready to release on December 10. A user redirected it to draft and said it is WP:TOOSOON. I do not think that the article falls WP:TOOSOON. As per TOO SOON, A film could merit an article if it meets either WP:Notability (film) or WP:GNG, and the Article just need to meet one of them otherwise it could be on WP:TOOSOON. This is the first Indian multilingual off-road race film and I believe that there is a scope for WP:FILMS Project. The article is well-sourced from reliable sources such as National media also the film is completed and confirmed the release on 10 December also the release date confirmation is sourced. Somebody from Wikipedia told me earlier on live chat that a film which is not been released yet but if its release is confirmed and sourced may have an article and also there are so many upcoming film articles are on Wikipedia. I researched the film, Muddy, before I create the article. I didn't expect an Afc redirect. What else should I include in the article to get published, or the article is currently eligible for mainspace? Kindly do the needful Onmyway22 (talk) 07:59, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Onmyway22 It is too soon because the film is not released yet, and you have not demonstrated that the mere production of the film is notable. The sources that you offered are no different from other unreleased films.
An example of an unreleased film that merits an article is Rust (upcoming film) and that is because of an incident that resulted in a death during production. 331dot (talk) 08:20, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Are we talking about Draft:Muddy (film)? I'd suggest this wasn't all that far from meeting WP:GNG with the references provided. It's a little odd to not have an article because it hasn't been released yet. It does seem to have plenty of coverage, it would just be if this was simply routine coverage. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Lee Vilenski and 331dot: I feel so happy to see the way you both responded to my query. I got your points and as per your suggestions I developed production and submitted the draft for review. Could u please check the draft Draft: Muddy (film) and update me if anything I had missed or I could include. Thanks again!! Onmyway22 (talk) 14:38, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

How can I auto-archive my bookmarks for future wiki references?[edit]

I have a thousand bookmarks that r educational. I want to archive them to archive org and archive is. Is there any automated and easy way to archive my bm to these sites? --203.87.156.109 (talk) 09:01, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

This is a Help Desk for asking questions about Wikipedia, which doesn't seem relevant to what you want. The archive sites scrape data from existing web locations, and are not interested in individual's bookmarks, however useful these may be to you personally. Why don't you just copy them to personal cloud storage (free from several suppliers), which will automatically synchronise them with a local folder of your choice? Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:24, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I don't think 203 is asking about saving their bookmarks as such, but instead about making sure the locations pointed to by these bookmarks are archived by archive sites, so they can be used on Wikipedia in future, even if the original sites go down. I don't know about a tool that could help with that, though. If this section gets archived without a proper answer, I recommend trying WP:VPT next. – Rummskartoffel 15:15, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]

@GregHannigan If you pass Wikipedia:Notability (people) or yoiur business passes WP:CORP then it is likely that someone will write a page about you or it one day. If you believe that Wikipedia will enhance your personal or corporate reputation please think again. Wikipedia adds no value to you. You must add value to Wikipedia. Passing WP:BIO or WP:CORP does that.
Being proud of one's achievements is fine. I am proud of mine. But I do not have a Wikipedia page and I do not meet the criteria to have one written about me FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 12:50, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[]
