Overall, significant progress has been made in the field of epigenetics and obesity and the first potential epigenetic markers for obesity that could be detected at birth have been identified. Eventually this may help in predicting an individual’s obesity risk at a young age and opens possibilities for introducing targeted prevention strategies. Read about progress so far.
Newborns of obese parents have altered DNA methylation patterns at imprinted genes FREE
Epidemiologic studies, some with long-term follow-up, have demonstrated the importance of periconceptional nutrition of the mother as a crucial factor for optimal development and the long-term health status of the next generation. This study goes beyond those realms to look at the potential impact of that the nutrition of both parents before conception has on the developmental programming of the future child.
A nonsense loss-of-function mutation in PCSK1 contributes to dominantly inherited human obesity
A significant proportion of severe familial forms of obesity remain genetically elusive. This study shows for the first time that a nonsense mutation in PCSK1 was the likely cause of dominantly inherited human obesity, due to the inhibiting properties of the propeptide fragment encoded by the null allele. Furthermore, the family sequencing design challenged the contribution of previously reported mutations to monogenic or at least severe obesity.
Energy balance measurement: when something is not better than nothing FREE
Energy intake and physical activity energy expenditure are key modifiable determinants of energy balance, traditionally assessed by self-report despite its repeated demonstration of considerable inaccuracies. The findings of many studies are questionable at best and sometimes incorrect and misleading. This has potentially serious implications for health care policy and clinical decision making. This paper clearly and succinctly examines this issue.

Professor Jane Wardle
It was with sadness that we heard of the recent death of our dear colleague Professor Jane Wardle. Jane was a member of academic staff at University College in London, in the Health Behaviour Research Centre, and an internationally recognised expert in the area of behavioural sciences and obesity. The details of her career and professional life have been covered in the tributes posted by University College and Cancer Research UK. The IJO would particularly like to emphasise the major contribution she made to obesity research and to the success of this journal. She was an Editorial Board Member and made substantial contributions to the strategic development and operational success of the journal. In the past 11 years she was an author of 24 papers published in the IJO, and also reviewed 62 manuscripts for the journal. These contributions to the success of the journal are substantial, but to be done over such an extended period of time by someone who was also developing her own academic and research career is very special.
We know that her family and close friends have lost a very special person, but the research community has also lost a wonderful colleague and friend. The IJO thanks Jane for her contributions and hopes that her family can take some consolation from knowing about the wonderful contribution she made to our science.
Dr. Timothy Bartness, 1953-2015
Dr. Timothy Bartness, PhD, of Georgia State University, sadly passed away on September 24th, 2015, after a yearlong battle with multiple myeloma. Tim was a national and international leader in the field of obesity, and made novel and significant contributions to the understanding of brain and adipose tissue connections. Tim received several prestigious accolades for his work, including a NIH Merit award, and recently began the Obesity Reversal Center at Georgia State University. Tim was an advocate for developing new scientists and trained many undergraduate, doctoral, post-doctoral students and early faculty. Tim contributed his time and knowledge to the field by participating in and leading scientific societies, serving on NIH and other review panels, and reviewing manuscripts, including being a reviewer and editorial board member for the International Journal of Obesity.
Tim was not only a scientific leader, but a friend and colleague to many. His sense of humor is remembered by all and he will be dearly missed.
